Santa Anita Park

IMG_2699-800

This weekend, I dragged my fiance out to Santa Anita Park, aka the Santa Anita race track, in Arcadia for some major stalking.  Our original plan was to catch a movie at the theatre located next door to the track, but a funny thing happened on the way to the show. 🙂  While driving to the movies, I got an email from fellow stalker Owen who told me that Santa Anita Park stood in for the entrance to Walley World in fave 80s movie National Lampoon’s Vacation.  Needless to say, I was absolutely SHOCKED!   All this time I’ve lived in L.A. and had no idea that Walley World was literally right in my own backyard.  So, I made my poor fiance detour the car and, with Owen’s directions in hand, the two of us headed over towards the racetrack.  🙂

IMG_2696-800

Santa Anita Park first opened its doors on Christmas Day of 1934 and has the distinction of being known as Southern California’s oldest race track.  Elias Jackson, aka “Lucky”, Baldwin had originally built a horse racing track on what is now the Arcadia County Golf Course in 1907.  Sadly, though, just two years after its opening, the government passed the Walker-Otis bill, which outlawed gambling and forced Lucky to close up shop.   Twenty-five years later, after California had legalized parimutuel betting, a company named the Los Angeles Turf Club opened up a race track just a few blocks from the former track’s site.  The Los Angeles Turf Club was owned by movie producer Hal Roach and a doctor named Charles H. Strub.  Roach and Strub commissioned their new track to be built in the Art Deco style by architect Gordon B. Kaufman, who is most well-known for designing both the Hoover Dam and the L.A. Times Building.  The original exterior of the race track building still stands at Santa Anita Park to this day.  Santa Anita has hosted a number of memorable competitions over the years, including the equestrian events of the 1984 Olympic Games and Seabiscuit’s big win – and final race – which took place on February 9, 1940.  Because of the involvement of movieman Hal Roach, the race track has long been associated with the silver screen.  Celebs like Bing Crosby, Louis B. Mayer, Alex Trebek, Errol Flynn, and Spencer Tracy all owned horses that raced at Santa Anita at one time or another.  And, of course, the track has also shown up in several Hollywood productions.

I have actually been dying to stalk the race track ever since it appeared in my favorite episode of the television series Las Vegas.  In the Season Three episode, entitled “Everything Old Is You Again”, Danny McCoy (played by – sigh – Josh Duhamel) has a flashback of sorts in which he fantasizes about what it would be like to run a 60’s era hotel and casino named the Jubliee.  In the episode, the entire cast dons 60’s regalia, uses terms like ” Poindexter” and “It’s a gas”, and dances to the Twist.  Everyone, that is, except for poor Danny, who doesn’t quite have the moves to the latest dance craze down yet.  He spends pretty much the entire episode begging people to teach him how to do the Twist.  I’m telling you, it is SUCH a cute episode!    And, it just so happens that the Club House at Santa Anita Park stood in for the Jubliee Hotel and Casino in the episode.  My fiance immediately recognized it when we first saw the show a few years back.  So, I really could not have been more excited to stalk the place this weekend!!    In a lucky twist of fate, while we were snapping some photos out front, an INCREDIBLY nice valet came up and started talking to us.  I told him that the Vegas episode that had filmed at the Park was my very favorite and he asked if my fiance and I wanted a tour of the areas used in the episode.  IF we wanted a tour????  IF we wanted a tour????  LOL  OF COURSE we wanted a tour!  🙂

The main entrance to the Club House also served as the main entrance to the Jubilee.

According to the valet, hundreds of casino gaming tables and slot machines were brought in to turn the main room of the Club into the casino’s main floor.

Other areas of the Club where filming took place include the bar where Sam (aka Vanessa Marcil) “worked”, which is, in reality, a cafeteria counter;

and the Jubliee’s “pool” area.  Because Santa Anita Park doesn’t actually have a pool, the Jubilee’s “pool” was in actuality just the Club’s back porch area.  Producers simply added some chaise lounges, a handful of bikini-clad women, some wet cement, splashing sounds, a bit of movie magic, and voila – they had themselves a hotel swimming pool!  🙂

At the end of the episode, Danny finds himself in the lobby of the present day Montecito Hotel and Casino, where Chubby Checker just happens to be on hand to entertain the guests . . .

. . . and to lead everyone, including Danny, in a rousing rendition of the Twist.  See, I told you it was a cute episode!  🙂

The racetrack was also featured in the Season Two Valentine’s Day episode of Beverly Hills, 90210  entitled “And Baby Makes Five”.  In the episode, Andrea finds some luck at the track by betting on horses with names such as Lovesick, Unrequited, and Grand Amour.  Notice a theme here?  😉

And, as mentioned in my introduction, the Park was also used in National Lampoon’s Vacation.  In the movie, an un-used portion of the track’s parking lot stood in for Walley World’s main entrance.  According to IMDB, a painted backdrop was installed behind the above pictured overpass to give the illusion of roller coasters in the foreground.  Love how you can still see the yellow divider lines in the road that were used in the filming!!

The racetrack’s GINORMOUS parking lot area stood in for Walley World’s parking lot, where Clark and his family race each other- with “Chariots of Fire” playing in the background – to the theme park’s entrance.  Again, a huge painted backdrop was used in this scene to create the illusion of roller coasters.

IMG_2727-800

Walley World’s main entrance – where Clark, upon hearing the news that the park is temporarily closed, punches Walley Moose in the nose – is actually Santa Anita’s South Entrance.  The entrance was dressed up quite a bit for the filming, so in person it looks much different than how it appeared onscreen in Vacation.  Also adding to the difference in appearance is the fact that the movie was filmed in 1983, long before Santa Anita’s main tower, which you can see in the above photograph, was built.   An interesting sidenote – it’s fairly common knowledge among locationites that Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia was used for the filming of the scenes inside of Walley World.  So why, you ask, was Magic Mountain’s real entrance not used in the movie?   Well, apparently, the original ending of Vacation  involved Clark W. Griswold and family leaving the “temporarily closed for repairs” Walley World and heading over to Roy Walley’s house, gun in hand, to demand that he entertain them.  When that ending didn’t fare well with test audiences, the finale we all know and love was shot on location at Magic Mountain.   Rather than waste money re-shooting the parking lot scenes, producers just used the scenes that had already been filmed at Santa Anita Park.   And the rest, as they say, is history!

[ad]

Santa Anita Park has also been featured in Seabiscuit, A Day at the Races, The Dark Horse, and the television series Jockeys, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: Santa Anita Park is located at 285 West Huntington Drive in Arcadia.  Las Vegas was filmed at the Park’s Club House.  The entrance to Walley World was really the South Entrance of Santa Anita Park.

Untitled

The overpass that the Griswold’s drive under when entering the Walley World parking lot is a bit tricky to find.  It is located directly off of Huntington Drive, near 659 West Huntington Drive.  The overpass leads to Westfield -Santa Anita Shopping Center and runs over one of the un-used areas of the racetrack’s parking lot.  You can see its exact location in the above map.

Rosie’s Pink House from The Wedding Singer

IMG_2626-800

ScreenShot1260

A couple of weeks ago, fellow stalker Owen contacted me to see if Mike, from MovieShotsLA, and I could help him track down Rosie, aka  the rappin’ granny’s,  pink house from the 1998 movie The Wedding Singer.  Owen had been trying for quite a while to locate the home, but just couldn’t make out the house number that appeared above Rosie’s front door.  So, Mike and I got to work in trying to nail down the home’s location, or at least its correct address number.

Untitled2

And, while neither Mike nor I could figure out that address number, Mike did notice a house number painted on the curb across the street from Rosie’s home (pictured above).  We were fairly certain that address number was 1428, so I immediately emailed Owen to let him know.  And, with that bit of information, he set off to locate the house.  I’m happy to report that it wasn’t long before he found it! 🙂

IMG_2633-800

ScreenShot1254

After searching every single 1400 block in the Pasadena area – which is where we were assuming the house was located – Owen ended up contacting the movie’s location manager, who got back to him pretty much immediately.  Amazingly enough, the location manager remembered the general vicinity of where the home was located, which ended up to be a long way from Pasadena.  It turns out that Rosie’s house is located in West Hollywood, just down the street from both Lauren Conrad’s former Hills  home  and the two houses that appeared in the original Halloween  movie.  I am happy to report that, despite its color, Rosie’s house looks pretty much exactly the same today as it did back in 1998 when The Wedding Singer  was filmed.  According to the location manager that Owen talked to, Rosie’s house was painted pink solely for the filming of the movie, much like the home featured at the end of 13 Going On 30. In real life, the house is painted a light shade of grey.  Also missing in real life is the white picket fence surrounding Rosie’s house, which I am assuming was also installed solely for filming purposes.

IMG_2630-800

The house located across the street from Rosie’s also looks pretty much exactly the same as it did in The Wedding Singer.  Even the address number painted on the curb is still there.  🙂  Love it!

Big THANK YOU to Owen for finding this location!!!  Very nicely done!!!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Don Draper’s House from Mad Men

img_2687-800

ScreenShot1352

Got an email last week from fellow stalker Karin who wanted me to locate the house belonging to Donald Draper (played by Jon Hamm) and his wife, Betty (played by January Jones), on the AMC television series Mad Men.   It turns out that my good friend, and fellow stalker E.J., over at The Movieland Directory, had written down a bunch of addresses where Mad Men filming had taken place over the years off of the On Location Vacations website.  Using those addresses, it wasn’t long before Karin and I had located the right house.   🙂  Thank you, E.J.!!  So, while out doing some stalking with Mike, from MovieShotsLA, last Friday, I dropped by the Draper residence to snap some pics.  🙂

IMG_2695-800

On Mad Men, the Draper family supposedly lives in the town of Ossining in Westchester County, New York.  In reality, though, their home is located in the suburbs of Pasadena, just a stone’s throw away from the Father of the Bride house.  It’s such a small movie world, isn’t it?  😉

ScreenShot1306

IMG_2689-800

I had a heck of a time making screen captures of the Draper home as it seems that, for some reason, the exterior of the house is rarely shown on the series.  I guess the producers of Mad Men  aren’t big on doing establishing shots!  LOL  You can see a paparazzi pic of Jon Hamm and January Jones filming at the house a few weeks ago here.

ScreenShot1307

IMG_2692-800

I am happy to report that Don Draper’s house looks exactly the same in person as it does on TV.  Except, of course, for the color of the front door.  On the series, the Draper’s front door is painted red, while the door of the real life home is blue.

ScreenShot1354

If you look at the house on Google Maps Street View, the front door is also red, which leads me to believe that the Google photographs must have been taken while Mad Men  filming was going on. So cool!

[ad]

 ScreenShot1305

Before Karin’s challenge, I had never watched even a single episode of Mad Men.  My fiance has been a longtime fan of the series, though, so, last night I popped in the pilot episode from his Season One DVD’s for a quick peruse.  It’s actually a very entertaining show about a wealthy group of Manhattanites living in the 60s, when everyone smoked everywhere, having a cocktail at the office was commonplace, and all husbands cheated on their wives.  Doesn’t sound like a very reputable show, but it definitely makes for some interesting storylines.  🙂  A bit of a disclaimer – the house that was featured in the pilot episode of Mad Men  is not the same residence that is being used now.  The house from the pilot episode is pictured above and as you can see looks quite different from the Pasadena residence that is used in all of the other episodes.

UPDATE:

Just got an email from fellow stalker Kevin who happened upon some Mad Men  filming at the Draper residence just a few weeks ago.  Kevin was nice enough to send me some photos he managed to snap of the many antique cars parked on the road, some of the filming equipment, and best of all, the Draper house all dressed up with its red front door. Big THANK YOU to Kevin!!! 🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Il Cielo

img_2480-800

Looking at wedding venues is so darn fun that, I swear, I think I would be happy just remaining engaged forever.  It could be my full time job.  What do you do?  Oh, I’m engaged – full time!  🙂  LOL  On Tuesday, my wedding venue expedition led my mom and me to a little restaurant in Beverly Hills named Il Cielo.    And I have to say that the place was downright amazing!!!  So much so that it’s at the very top of my very narrowed down list of possible locations.  Because I am such a picky eater, for years I’ve been steadfast about serving a buffet at my wedding, as opposed to a set menu.   Il Cielo doesn’t offer a buffet – they only do sit-down dinners – yet they are STILL at the top of my list!  Now, that’s saying a lot!  🙂

img_2476-800

Il Cielo, which means “the sky” in Italian, was opened up in 1986 inside of a tiny Beverly Hills bungalow by a man named Pasquale Vericella.  In the 70s, that bungalow was the home to another Italian restaurant named En Brochette.  A frequent visitor to En Brochette, Pasquale adored the intimate, homey feel of the restaurant and decided it was just the type of place he himself wanted to own someday.  He was so adamant about opening his restaurant in that exact spot, in fact, that for years he begged En Brochette’s owners to sell the restaurant and the bungalow to him.   They finally relented in 1986, and Pasquale opened up his own Tuscan-style restaurant, featuring his mother and grandmother’s traditional family recipes.  I had the pleasure of meeting Pasquale yesterday and of course asked him all sorts of questions about which celebrities had dined at Il Cielo.  He quickly brushed off my queries and said “When you get married here, the only celebrity we are concerned with is YOU!”  🙂  So cute!!!!

img_2474-800

Il Cielo has been voted “the most romantic restaurant in Los Angeles” numerous times by numerous publications.  It has also been named “one of the top five places to get married in the country” – yes, the COUNTRY – by The New York Times.  Those are some pretty amazing accolades!   The restaurant has hosted over 1,500 weddings in its 23 year history.  According to the restaurants’ events manager, Fabio, Il Cielo’s philosophy is service first, food second, and ambiance third.  And from what I witnessed yesterday, all three of those seem to be top notch, especially the service.  When I asked where the bar gets placed during a wedding reception, Fabio looked at me with confusion on his face.  Then, realization dawning, he explained, “Oh no, we do not do waiting in line here.  Our servers walk around taking drink orders, so that your guests never have to get out of their chair!”  OMG LOVE IT!  Even better than that, after the reception ends, guests are served lattes, cappuccinos, and biscotti out on the sidewalk while waiting for the valet to retrieve their cars.  SO LOVE THAT!  I mean, this place is downright A-MA-ZING.

img_2478-800

And, of course, there’s also the celeb factor!  Google the words “Il Cielo” and “celebrities” and a list of a hundred well-known names will pop up, including Christian Bale, Nancy Reagan, my girl Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia De Rossi, Robert Redford, Rod Stewart, Colin Farrell, Claudia Shiffer, Ali Larter, Brandon Routh, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Nikki and Cathy Hilton.  Lesley Ann Warren was married at Il Cielo and (that little homewrecker) Brad Pitt took Gwyneth Paltrow there on their first date.

screenshot1288

screenshot1290

And, of course, Il Cielo is also a filming location.   At the beginning of Legally Blonde, it’s the restaurant where Elle Woods’ boyfriend, Warner, does not propose.  When Warner first announces he is taking Elle to Il Cielo, she says “Oooh, I love that restaurant.  I heard Madonna went into labor there.”  LOL LOL LOL

ilcielo

Il Cielo’s patio area stood in for the patio of Adam Sandler’s restaurant in the 2004 movie Spanglish. The exterior of Adam’s restaurant (pictured above) is actually the exterior of the Hal Valentine Hair Salon, which is located directly next door to Il Cielo.

screenshot1294

screenshot1295

On the Season Three episode of Entourage entitled “Strange Days”, Ari Gold re-proposes to his wife after 15 years of marriage with a ginormous diamond ring on Il Cielo’s back patio.  The restaurant has actually popped up in Entourage no less than three times!

screenshot1284

screenshot1286

screenshot1287

In the Season 3 episode of The Hills entitled “A Date With The Past”, former flame Ste-phen Colletti takes Lauren Conrad out for a “strictly platonic” dinner at Il Cielo.  Smart move, Ste-phen, bringing a girl you just want to be friends with to the most romantic restaurant in all of L.A.!   LOL   Il Cielo was also featured in the Season Five opener of The Simple Life entitled “Welcome to Camp Shawnee” as the location where Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie finally bury the hatchet and become friends again over an Italian lunch.

img_2479-800

I honestly can’t recommend stalking Il Cielo enough – either as a wedding venue or for a romantic dinner!!!!  This place is truly one of a kind!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: Il Cielo is located at 9018 Burton Way in Beverly Hills.  You can visit their website here.  Il Cielo is closed on Sundays.

The “Joey” Apartment Building

img_2485-8001

For quite a while now I have been begging Mike, from MovieShotsLA, to locate the apartment building where Joey Tribbiani lived with his nephew, Michael, on the Friends  spin-off Joey.   So, imagine my surprise when I came across the address randomly in The Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book.   In the book, the address is listed as an almost after-thought, which is why it took me so long to notice it.  LOL  Apparently, most stalkers aren’t as interested in finding Joey  filming locations as I am.  🙂  LOL  Being that the show was canceled after only 14 episodes, I can’t say I’m all that surprised.   But, because Joey was always my favorite Friends  character (besides Rachel, of course!), I absolutely loved that show!   “How you doin’?”  😉

screenshot1279

img_2482-800

On the show, Joey lived in a large apartment building named Monroe Manor, located directly beneath the Hollywood sign.  Apparently, production designer John Schaffner chose the 50s style building because of its mid-century appeal.  He said, “I didn’t want to do another Los Angeles show in a Spanish house or Craftsman cottage.  I was more inspired by architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Rudolph Schindler, who worked in natural materials that create a more casual feeling.”  Monroe Manor definitely has a unique appearance to it and evokes a feeling of old time Hollywood.

img_2487-800

The Monroe Manor complex was constructed in 1949 and is made up of ten terraced, duplex-type units built right into a Hollywood hillside.  Each of the twenty apartments in the complex is entirely different in size and style.  A side view of the building, which shows its tiered design, is pictured above.  As you can see in the above photograph, the building is actually much larger than it’s front exterior would lead you to believe and much larger than it appeared onscreen in Joey.  I read online that Monroe Manor was supposedly modeled after my girl Marilyn Monroe, but – call me crazy – I just don’t see the resemblance.  😉  LOL  I think it is safer to say that the building was most likely just named after her.  🙂

screenshot1282

In an interesting side note, after Joey was cancelled in 2004, a paramedics company in Charlotte, North Carolina purchased the entire set from the show (pictured above) to be used for their training simulations!  Apparently, simulations are acted out on the former Joey  set and recorded for later review and evaluation.  How incredibly cool is that??  I so think I need to go work for that company!!!!  North Carolina, here I come!  😉

img_2481-800

In an even more interesting side note, when Matt LeBlanc first came to Hollywood, long before hitting it big with Friends, he actually lived at Monroe Manor!!!!!  It was a complete coincidence years later when production designer John Schaffner chose the building to be used as the residence of struggling actor Joey Tribbiani.  This was definitely a case of art imitating life!  🙂  Ironically, my good friend Maura has been asking me to find Matt LeBlanc’s house for some time now – so, Maura, this one’s for you.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It:  The Joey  apartment building, aka Monroe Manor, is located at 2232 North Beachwood Canyon Drive in Hollywood.  Joey lived in Apartment #7.  In real life, Matt LeBlanc lived in #16.

Miceli’s Restaurant

img_2449-800

After watching Kyra Sedgwick’s Star Ceremony last week, my friend Blaze and I headed over to Hollywood’s oldest pizzeria, better known as Miceli’s Restaurant,  to grab a bite to eat.   Miceli’s – pronounced Micheli’s – opened its doors way back in 1949 and has the distinction of being known as Hollywood’s first pizza house.  The restaurant was started by an Italian couple named Carmen and Sylvia Miceli, along with four of their siblings, who brought their family recipes all the way from Sicily to Los Angeles.  The restaurant is still owned and operated by the Miceli family and apparently, most nights, Carmen, himself, is on hand to great his guests!  Because of the restaurants’ storied Hollywood history, I just HAD to stalk the place.  🙂

img_2457-800

And I wasn’t disappointed!!  The second you walk through Miceli’s front doors you are immediately transported back in time!  With its dimly lit interior, red leather booths, and black and white photographs of celebrities of yesteryear lining the entryway, the restaurant definitely gives off an Old Hollywood vibe.  It is such  a cool place!!!!  My favorite part of Miceli’s had to be the intricately carved wood and red leather booths.  I’ve never seen booths like that in my entire life!  Ironically, the booths originally belonged to the old Pig N’ Whistle restaurant, which I blogged about yesterday.   When the Pig N’ Whistle closed its doors in 1949, its gorgeous wooden booths were sold to Miceli’s, where they remain to this day.

[ad]

img_2454-800

I was also pretty obsessed with the ceilings at Miceli’s.  🙂  I don’t know what it is with me and ceilings lately, but every time I walk into a historic building my eyes always go directly up to the roof.  Nine times out of ten, the ceilings of old buildings are like works of art.  And Miceli’s ceiling certainly did not disappoint.  Intricate wrought iron chandeliers hang from gorgeous carved wooden beams throughout the restaurant.  Unfortunately, because Miceli’s is so dimly lit, my photographs of the interior did not come out very well.  🙁

img_2451-800

Not surprisingly, Miceli’s Restaurant has always been popular with celebrities.  During Hollywood’s Golden Era, stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, my girl Marilyn Monroe, and Presidents Nixon and JFK all dined at Miceli’s.  In more recent years, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, The Beatles, and Julia Roberts have all been spotted at the eatery.

screenshot1271

screenshot1272

And, yes, Miceli’s is also a filming location!  In 2007’s Knocked Up, Seth Rogan takes his baby momma, Katherine Heigl, to the historic restaurant on a date.

img_2460-800

I HIGHLY recommend stalking Miceli’s!   The place is worth a trip just for the ambiance alone!   But besides the decor, the food at Miceli’s is also EXCELLENT and the portions are ginormous!   I just about died over the restaurant’s garlic toast!!   Sadly, though, since we ate at Miceli’s during lunchtime, we missed the “singing waiters” which the Italian restaurant is famous for.  🙁   Every night, the Miceli servers step up to the piano to serenade diners with authentic Italian arias, show tunes, and the standards.  Sometimes patrons are even invited to get up and sing a note or two themselves.  Since karaoke is one of my very favorite past times, I am definitely planning on dragging my fiance there for a nighttime visit!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: Miceli’s Restaurant is located at 1646 North Las Palmas in Hollywood.

Pig N’ Whistle Restaurant

img_2321-800

Last week, before seeing the Dirty Dancing stage show, my fiance and I grabbed a bite to eat at the historic Hollywood restaurant named the Pig N’ Whistle.  I had wanted to visit the celebrated Hollywood eatery ever since it appeared on a Fourth Season episode of The Bachelor back in 2003.  🙂  And, let me tell you, it was well worth the wait.  🙂

  img_2319-8001

The Pig N’ Whistle first opened it doors on Hollywood Boulevard on July 22, 1927.  The restaurant was part of a small chain of twelve cafes that dotted the West Coast from Los Angeles to Seattle.  The Hollywood location was designed by renowned architectural firm Morgan, Walls & Clements, who were also responsible for building the El Capitan, Wiltern, and Old Globe Theatres.  The restaurant was built in an elegant Gothic style, featuring hand-painted tiles, carved wooden ceilings, and stained glass windows.  The Pig N’ Whistle was so beautiful that it was even featured in a 1928 issue of Architectural Digest.  The restaurant, which was built before the days of movie theatre concession stands, was located directly next door to the famed Egyptian Theatre. It became popular with theatregoers who wanted to grab a pre- or post-show ice cream or drink at the restaurant’s soda fountain or some candy at it’s candy counter.

img_2316-8001

During its heyday, which ran from 1927 to 1949, the Pig N’ Whistle was extremely popular with the Hollywood set.  Stars like Shirley Temple, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Barbara Stanwyck, Spencer Tracy, Howard Hughes, Loretta Young, Jane Wyman, and even Elizabeth Short, aka The Black Dhalia, were spotted dining there.

img_2314-8001

img_2315-8001

But that all changed when the restaurant closed its doors in 1949.  The former Pig N’ Whistle space went through a succession of different owners, including a Numero Uno pizzeria and a clothing store, and a succession of remodels until two restaurateurs decided to rescue it and restore it to its former grandeur.  In 1999, Chris Breed and Alan Hajjar (the team who was also behind the wildly popular Sunset Room restaurant and bar) masterminded a two year, $1.5 million restoration of the former restaurant.  The duo unearthed the building’s original hand-carved ceilings, stained glass windows, and molded sconces.  The new Pig N’ Whistle opened its doors once again in March of 2001.  And it is an absolutely beautiful place!!!!!

[ad]

The restaurant is also no stranger to the silver screen.  🙂  On the Fourth Season of The Bachelor, the Pig N’ Whistle hosted a group date for Bachelor Bob Guiney and five female contestants.  The group partied in the restaurant’s back room and even competed in a small karaoke contest. 🙂  According to our waitress, the Hollywood restaurant is featured constantly in productions, but, unfortunately, she could not remember which ones.  Isn’t that always the case??  What is wrong with these people?  LOL

img_2318-8001

The Pig N’ Whistle is a FABULOUS restaurant and I HIGHLY recommend stalking it.  Besides the beautiful Old Hollywood ambiance, the restaurant serves up some GREAT food in HUGE portions.  The French Fries and Cobb Salad were to die for!!  I absolutely cannot wait to eat there again!!!!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

p1010615-800

Thanks to fellow stalker Owen, last week Mike, from MovieShotsLA, and I were able to stalk Robbie Hart’s house from the 1998 romantic comedy The Wedding Singer.  I had actually been wanting to find The Wedding Singer  house for quite a while now, so when Owen told me that he knew where it was located, I just about died!!!  And Mike and I literally ran right out to stalk it.  🙂

I am very happy to report that Robbie’s house looks EXACTLY the same today as it did when The Wedding Singer  was filmed there over eleven years ago.  I mean, even the paint colors are still the same!!  LOVE IT!  The home was originally built in 1908 by one of Pasadena’s first major landowners and prominent citizens, David MacPherson, who was a design engineer for the Mt. Lowe Railway.

In The Wedding Singer, the home actually belongs to Robbie’s sister and her husband.  Robbie lives in the basement area, which, as you can see in the above screen captures, is reached through a little side door marked 1075 1/2.  LOL  In reality, though, that door and basement area do not exist – they were built solely for the filming of the movie.

Robbie’s house, especially the front porch area, is featured numerous times throughout The Wedding Singer.  It is a very cute and very unique, almost barnlike, structure and I highly recommend stalking it!

Big THANK YOU to Owen for finding this location!!! 🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

The Bedtime Stories School

img_2422-800

Last week, while searching for the Bedtime Stories  house, Mike, from MovieShotsLA, and I decided to also try to find the school featured in the movie.  We started our search by looking at street views of different elementary schools in the Los Angeles area, but pretty much came up empty-handed.  So, I decided to once again ask my friend who had worked on the movie if she happened to remember where the school was located.  She, of course, did not, but what she did remember was that the school from the movie wasn’t actually a school at all, but a public library.  She said that the exterior of the library had been changed quite extensively for the filming and made to look a lot bigger than it actually is.  Two whole wings were actually added to one side of the building to make it look more like an elementary school.  So, armed with that little bit of information, off I went to search local libraries.  And, sure enough, it wasn’t long before I found the right one!  🙂

In real life, Daniel Webster Elementary School is, in fact, the Los Angeles Memorial Branch Library which was constructed in 1930.  It was built to honor twenty alumni of Los Angeles High School, which is located directly across the street, who had lost their lives in the first World War.  Students had originally purchased a small parcel of land across the street from the high school in 1922 and turned it over to the Park Commission with the decree that a memorial park, in honor of all alumni who had fought in the war, would be built on the premises.  Today, that park is known as L.A. High Memorial Park.  The following year, students and alumni purchased an additional parcel of land adjacent to the park.  In 1929, the City of Los Angeles decided to build a library on that adjacent piece of land and commissioned the architecture firm Austin and Ashley, who had also designed the high school, to build it.  The library was designed to match the English Tudor style architecture of the high school, which had been built twelve years beforehand.    A stained glass window, designed by Judson Art Studio, with the names of the twenty alumni who had lost their lives, was installed in the adult reading room.  The library officially opened to the public on April 29, 1930.

Sadly, the original Los Angeles High School building was badly damaged in the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake and was quickly condemned by the City of Los Angeles.  Preservationists tried to stop the demolition of the beautiful building, but a mysterious fire gutted the school, thereby sealing its fate.  The building was completely demolished later that same year and a huge blue and gold cement monstrosity was built in its place (pictured above).   That monstrosity even pops up in Bedtime Stories, in the scene when Adam Sandler picks his niece and nephew up from school.  You can see pictures of what Los Angeles High School used to look and pictures of its demolition here  and here.   So sad!!!!

Ironically enough, the original Los Angeles High School building was a frequent filming location, showing up in A Kiss Before Dying (1956), Compulsion, and the television series Room 222.  You can watch the intro to Room 222, in which the school is featured prominently, here.

As you can see in the above screen capture and photographs, the Los Angeles Memorial Branch Library looks much different and much smaller in person than how it appeared onscreen.   You can also see the wing that was added to the right side of the building.

The front door of the library is very recognizable from the film, though.  🙂

Because the real interior of the library looks nothing like an elementary school, the interior scenes were shot about 20 miles away at McKinley School in Pasadena.  And, according to the  librarian who I talked to while stalking the place, the interior of the Memorial Branch Library, but not the exterior, was featured in the 1987 movie Baby Boom.  Go figure.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: The Bedtime Stories school is really the Memorial Branch Library located at 4625 West Olympic Boulevard in Los Angeles.  The interior school scenes were filmed at McKinley School located at 325 South Oak Knoll Avenue in Pasadena.

The Pantages Theatre

img_2346-8001

As promised earlier in the week, I thought I would dedicate today’s post to the historic Pantages Theatre in Hollywood where I saw Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage  last Tuesday night .   And let me tell you, the Pantages Theatre is a site to see, in and of itself!  The Art Deco landmark was built in 1930 by vaudeville theatre mogul Alexander Pantages for a whopping $1.25 million – and we’re talking 1930’s money!!!!  It was designed by architect B. Marcus Priteca, who conceived most of the theatres in the Pantages chain.  But, in an ironic twist of events, when the theatre first opened to the public on June 4, 1930, it was not opened as a Pantages, but instead under the Fox Theatre name.  In 1929, while the Pantages was being built, Alexander was knee-deep in a scandal involving another of his many theatres.   It seems Alexander, who was in his sixties at the time, was accused and found guilty of raping one of his sixteen year old female ushers at his theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.    After being sent to jail, he was forced to open his new Hollywood theatre under a different name.  In 1931, Pantages appealed the case and was awarded a new trial.  His defense in the second trial maintained that rival theatre company RKO along with Joseph Kennedy (yes, that Joseph Kennedy) had framed him in order to purchase his theatre chain at a low price.  Since the broom closet where the rape had supposedly occured was too small a space for two people to fit in, the jury acquitted him and Alexander was released from prison.  But Pantages never regained his luxor in Hollywood.  Alexander Pantages passed away only two months after his release from prison, broke and broken.

img_2331-8001

The Pantages has gone through a succession of owners during its almost eighty year history. In 1949, Howard Hughes purchased the theatre and renamed it RKO Pantages.  His offices were located above the theatre on the building’s second floor.  During the RKO years, from 1949 to 1959 , the Pantages hosted ten Academy Awards ceremonies. It was also home to the Emmy Awards through 1977.  In 1967, the Pantages was taken over by Pacific Theatres, who in 1977 joined forces with the Nederlander Theatre Organization to refurbish the property and turn it into a live theatre venue.  In October of 2000, Disney opened its hit show The Lion King  at the Pantages, which ran for over two years and almost 900 performances.  Just prior to The Lion King’s  opening, the Pantages underwent a painstaking $10 million renovation process, bringing the theatre back to her original splendor.  Since that time, the theatre has been home to over 45 live stage productions including Mama Mia, Annie, Rent, Cats, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

The Pantages is an absolutely beautiful theatre and a stunning example of Art Deco architecture.

  From its sweeping staircases . . .

. . . to its sparkling Art Deco chandeliers, I was absolutely mesmerized by the architectural detail throughout.  The Pantages is truly a wonder and I HIGHLY recommend stalking it, if you get the chance!

The Pantages is no stranger to the silver screen, either.  It was featured in The Bodyguard, as the site of the Academy Awards ceremony where Whitney Houston was a presenter;

the exterior of it shows up very briefly in The Black Dhalia, as Josh Hartnett makes his way into the Frolic Room which is located right next door;

and in L.A. Confidential, as Kevin Spacey does the very same thing;

and its stage was featured in Michael Jackson’s music video for the song “You Are Not Alone”.  The Pantages also showed up in Season Two of Ugly Betty (it’s the “New York” theatre where Henry takes Betty to see the musical Wicked), Paparazzi (it’s the site of Cole’s movie premiere at the very end), Ed Wood, The Jazz Singer, Money Talks, and Batman Forever.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂
