A Lot Like Love is a movie I can’t not watch.  Even though I’ve seen it at least a dozen times and own the DVD, if I happen to catch it on TV, need to scan through it for a post, or it pops up in my Netflix recommendations, I’m pretty much viewing it in its entirety.  And thank goodness, too, because doing so led me to find a new location from the film recently, one that I thought I had already pinpointed – the house belonging to Oliver Martin’s (Ashton Kutcher) parents in the 2005 romcom.  First, let me back up a bit.

Ten years ago (egads!), my buddy Mike, from MovieShotsLA, tracked down what I thought was the Martin residence via a 2006 Los Angeles Times article chronicling homes featured onscreen.  In the blurb, author Danny Miller states, “Encino resident Ramona Hennesy creates brochures showing her house’s best features and sends them off to location scouts all over town.  Her efforts have paid off.  Several commercials have been filmed in her ranch home.  Last year, the house had a featured role in the film A Lot Like Love.  Both the interior and the backyard were used, and her carport was even transformed into Ashton Kutcher’s bedroom.”  A quick scan through public records provided us with the property’s address (17050 Magnolia Boulevard) and I ran right out to stalk the place shortly thereafter.  Upon arriving, I was surprised to see the pad fronted by large hedges that obscured it almost entirely from view, as you can see below.  What little was visible did not look familiar from the movie, as I mentioned in the post I wrote about the locale a few days later.

Google Maps imagery from 2007 (two years after the movie was released) show the hedges in a much less mature state, so figuring they were a post-A Lot Like Love addition, I did not think much further on the subject.

Flash forward to this past April.  While making screen captures of the flick in preparation for this post, I fell into the familiar trap of viewing it through to the end and was shocked to see an address number of “17204” posted by the front door of the house across the street from Oliver’s parents’ place in the closing scene in which Oliver and his longtime on-again/off-again paramour Emily Friehl (Amanda Peet) finally get together.  That number, though close, did not exactly coincide with the 17050 address of the property I’d blogged about all those years ago.  What the whaaat?  So I headed over to Google to search for homes numbered 17204 in the Los Angeles area and quickly came across one at 17204 Otsego Street in Encino that matched the residence Emily and Oliver kissed in front of, albeit with quite a bit more foliage.

From there, I flipped Google Street View’s little yellow man around to see the property across the street and, sure enough, Oliver’s parents’ house was staring me right in the face (again, with quite a bit more foliage).  Had the article gotten things wrong?

Confused, I pulled up the old Los Angeles Times article and quickly realized that I had read too much between the lines all those years ago (that was back when I was an amateur stalker, after all Winking smile).  I’d simply assumed the Magnolia Boulevard residence had been used for exteriors and interiors, as well as backyard shots, but the article never actually mentions the front exterior at all.  D’oh!  As I soon came to find out, Oliver’s parents’ house was a mash-up of both properties, which are located right around the corner from each other.  The Otsego Street house was utilized in all scenes featuring the front of the Martin home . . .

. . . including the final scene, which was my favorite of the movie.  While there, I couldn’t help but re-enact the hissy fit Oliver’s sister, Ellen (Taryn Manning), has over the fact that Oliver is holding up her wedding.  (Lucifer fans – that’s Aimee Garcia, aka forensics expert Ella Lopez, in the pink dress below!  She plays Ellen’s best friend in the movie.)

As you can see in the screen capture as compared to my photograph below, the roofline and window framing of 17050 Magnolia match that of the Martin home.

As mentioned in the Los Angeles Times article, the property’s carport was transformed into Oliver’s bedroom for the movie.

Luckily, the Magnolia Boulevard home’s front gates were open when I stalked the place back in 2008, so I got to snap a couple of photos of said carport.

Why producers chose to use two properties in the film is unclear to me, but I am guessing it has something to do with the hedges surrounding the Magnolia Boulevard residence, which I now believe were there at the time of the A Lot Like Love shoot.  The movie’s final scene, in which Emily runs from Oliver’s house to her car parked across the street, required a location that was open to the road.  I think the production team likely fell in love with the Magnolia pad’s interior, but found the exterior too closed-off for the end sequence, so they searched for a secondary property to utilize.  I was hoping the DVD commentary with director Nigel Cole and producers Armyan Bernstein and Kevin Messick would provide some clarification on the subject, but, other than the fact that filming of the wedding segment took place in the Valley, nothing was said about the Martin residence.

Stalk It: The house used for exterior shots of Oliver’s parents’ residence in A Lot Like Love can be found at 17201 Otsego Street in Encino.  The pad Emily parks in front of at the end of the movie is directly across the street at 17204 Otsego.  The home utilized for interior and backyard sequences is located around the corner at 17050 Magnolia Boulevard.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times – I hate incorrect filming location information!  I recently encountered some erroneous reporting which led me to stalk a site that, come to find out, does not actually have any movie or television connections (at least, none that I could dig up).  Hmph!  Because the property has played host to a couple of celebrity photo shoots, though, and is an absolutely stunning example of 1960s architecture, I figured it was still worthy of a blog post.  So here goes.  Back in June, a fellow stalker named Manon emailed me a link to a house featured in an online film locations database asking me to identify it.  When I read in the description that the pad had not only appeared in the original 1960 Ocean’s 11 movie, but a James Bond flick from the same era, I just about hyperventilated.  Images of the place showing the property in all of its retro glory, with decorative wood screens, bright orange front doors and a rock-walled fireplace, only served to further my intrigue.  So I immediately set about tracking it down.

Fortunately, finding this particular locale was a snap thanks to a street sign reading “Devlin Drive” that was visible in one of the images featured online.  I simply headed to Google Street View, inputted “Devlin Drive, Los Angeles,” and began scanning through the various houses located there.  I came across the right pad at 1344 Devlin Drive in Hollywood Hills West mere minutes later, promptly added the address to my To-Stalk List and visited it while in L.A. shortly thereafter, without doing any further research on the subject.

It was not until I sat down to start penning this post that I discovered the home was not actually featured in Ocean’s 11 – or James Bond.

Though the place would undeniably fit perfectly into either flick, I scanned through the original Ocean’s 11 TWICE and did not see it anywhere.

I also scanned through every 1960s James Bond flick that did any filming in California (as it turns out there aren’t many) and did not see the house pop up at all, so I believe that information is also incorrect.

I am still glad to have seen the striking pad in person nonetheless.  Originally built in 1960 by Bray Architects, the gorgeous mid-century-style residence boasts 2 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2,500 square feet of living space, a natural rock double fireplace, floor to ceiling glass windows, 0.37 acres of land, a terrace, and a garden.

Some of the interior is visible through the massive front windows and I was practically drooling upon seeing it.

The home is such a relic, I half-expected Don Draper to come waltzing into view casually sipping a martini.

Considering its authentic retro aesthetic, I am fairly certain the pad has appeared in a production or two at some point, but, surprisingly, I could not find any cinematic ties to the place in all of my research.

Stalk It: The house from Ben Affleck’s photo shoot for the December 2017 issue of Men’s Journal magazine is located at 1344 Devlin Drive in Hollywood Hills West.

Being that four of my favorite shows were recently cancelled, I have been on the lookout for alternative series to watch.  So when a fellow stalker named Catherine contacted me last week to ask if I had any intel on the location of the house from ABC’s new comedy Splitting Up Together, I welcomed the opportunity to sit through a few episodes.  Not only did I end up really enjoying it – the sitcom is funny, warm, witty, and engaging – but I also managed to quickly track down the pad where the main characters – Lena (Jenna Fischer) and Martin (Oliver Hudson) and their children, Mae (Olivia Keville), Mason (Van Crosby) and Milo (Sander Thomas) – live.  As both Catherine and I had surmised, the residence is in the San Gabriel Valley.  I happened to be in the area just a few days after pinpointing it, so I, of course, ran right out to stalk the place.

Based upon the Danish show Bedre skilt end aldrig (which translates to “better divorced than never”), Splitting Up Together centers around a divorcing couple – Lena and Martin – who, because they are upside-down on the mortgage of their large Craftsman-style dwelling, choose to remain living together, switching off parenting and household responsibilities week-to-week with the on-duty parent living in the main residence and the off-duty one shacking up in the detached garage.  And yes, without giving too much away, the storyline does heavily lean toward an eventual reconciliation between the two.

While watching the series’ pilot, I noticed that an address number of “1947” was visible on a beam above the front porch of Lena and Martin’s picturesque home.  Working on both my and Catherine’s hunch that the residence was located either in Altadena, Pasadena or South Pasadena, I began running Google searches for “1947” and “street” along with each of the three cities’ names.  I hit pay dirt during the South Pasadena leg of the hunt thanks to a realtor.com listing for a house at 1947 Oak Street, which was the first result kicked back.  A quick look at that address via Street View showed me it was the right spot.

Per Zillow, the 1916 pad boasts 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 3,455 square feet of living space, hardwood flooring throughout, a 0.47-acre lot, a pool, a hot tub, a wet bar, a detached 2-car garage, and a 600-square-foot pool house with a full kitchen and a 3/4 bath.

The 2-story dwelling, which was remodeled in 2014, is utilized regularly in establishing shots on Splitting Up Together.

The pad also pops up in the series’ opening credits.

Not much on location filming takes place on the premises, though.  While the property’s actual interior was utilized in the pilot, once the show got picked up, a replica of that interior was built on a soundstage at Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank for all subsequent episodes.

The South Pasadena pad’s actual backyard also made an appearance in the Splitting Up Together pilot.

As was the case with the residence’s interior, once the show was picked up, a set based upon the backyard was built on a soundstage.

Same goes for the garage – though I believe that the South Pasadena home’s pool house was actually utilized for exterior shots of Lena and Martin’s garage in the pilot (pictured below).

Whatever the case may be, once Splitting Up Together got picked up, a set re-creation of either the pool house or garage was constructed on a soundstage for all subsequent filming.  That re-creation is pictured below.

A scene from the show’s Season One finale, titled “Heat Wave,” in which Lena and Martin send their kids off to summer camp, was also shot on location in front of the house.

I believe that the home’s real life backyard was likely utilized in the “Pina Colada Party” scene from that same episode, as well.

Because the property is so picturesque, I figured it had to have been featured in other productions at some point – and I was right.

Thanks to the Movie Locations and More website, I learned that Donna Keppel (Brittany Snow) lived in the very same house at the beginning of the 2008 horror flick Prom Night.  The exterior of the residence was only shown briefly, though, and at the time was painted a different color.

A Street View image from September 2011, showing the house with that darker hue, is pictured below.  It is amazing how much the lighter color changes the appearance of the place.

I am unnaturally obsessed with pretty much all things southern – southern accents (what I wouldn’t give for a slow, lilting twang!), homemade fried chicken, and large plantation-style houses, among many others.  So I, of course, immediately fixated on the huge columned estate where Afeni Shakur (Sola Bamis) lived on Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac & the Notorious B.I.G. as soon as I saw it pop up on my screen.  The sweeping porch, the cascade of canopied trees, the wooden swing – there was no part of the picturesque property that I was not completely smitten with.  When my dad called me up after noticing the house on the show himself a couple of days later and asked if I had any intel on its location, I knew I had to track it down STAT!  Considering the home’s large lot, abundant foliage, and colonial style, my first inkling was that it was in Pasadena, though I couldn’t imagine such a stunning manse existing in my former town and not having any knowledge of it.  That thought almost made me dismiss looking in Crown City altogether, but thankfully I forged ahead.  I knew that if the residence was anywhere in the area, it would likely be in northeast Pasadena, so I set my sights there and, after quite a bit of searching, finally came across it at 3426 Barhite Street.

The two-story estate was originally constructed in 1888 as part of a small development of homes known as the Vosburg Tract.

One of the first structures to be built on the now bustling Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, at the time of its inception the residence was situated on a huge parcel of land that spanned almost an entire block.

Portions of the original tract have since been sold off and the property no longer abuts Sierra Madre Villa Ave., but the parcel (roughly outlined in pink below) is still pretty darn substantial.

The home itself is absolutely massive, as well – 4,772 square feet according to Zillow – and stretches along a huge portion of Barhite Street.

The colossal dwelling boasts 6 bedrooms, 5 baths, hardwood flooring throughout, a fireplace, a covered wraparound porch, a wraparound balcony on the second floor, and vaulted ceilings.

The 0.97-acre grounds, which feature a tennis court, a sports court, a large pool, gardens galore, and a sprawling lawn, are nothing short of stunning, as you can see below.

The whole place just screams “antebellum south.”

The estate only appeared in one episode of Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac & the Notorious B.I.G. – episode eight, titled “Tupac Amaru Shakur.”

It first popped up in the opening scene in which Afeni learns that her son, Tupac (Marcc Rose), has just been shot in Las Vegas.

It is then featured in a flashback scene in which Tupac surprises his mom by gifting her the house.  Though it is never said where the residence is supposed to be located on the show, per a 1997 People magazine article, in real life the rapper purchased a 6-bedroom property situated on a 2.2-acre lot in Stone Mountain, Georgia for his mother in 1995.  Of course, once I read those words, I set out to track that pad down and am 99.9% certain it can be found at 883 Rays Road.

Oh man, have I been wanting to say this for years – Tal Weaver’s house has been found!  It is thanks to Mike, from MovieShotsLA, that I finally get to!  For those who have no earthly idea what I am talking about, Tal Weaver – and his house – appeared in the Season 2 episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 titled “Leading from the Heart.”  In the episode, Tal, played by a very young and very long-haired Gabriel Macht (aka Suits’ Harvey Specter – my latest celebrity crush), throws a raving party at his sprawling Beverly Hills manse that is attended by Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty), her brother Brandon (Jason Priestley), and their wheelchair-bound cousin, Bobby (Gordon Currie).  Though the home’s onscreen role was brief, it was extremely memorable and I have spent the past few years trying to track it down.  I recently brought Mike in on the hunt and he managed to get in touch with Phil Buckman, aka the episode’s “Surfer Dude” – “Did you hear what that dude in the wheelchair said to me?” – who, thankfully, remembered where filming had taken place.  Come to find out not only is Tal’s house one of L.A.’s most famous, but it’s a spot I had actually stalked and blogged about previously.  As Phil informed Mike, Tal’s mansion is none other than the Cecil B. DeMille Estate located at 2000 De Mille Drive in Los Feliz.  How I never realized it is beyond me!  So, thank you, Mike and Phil!  (When Mike gave me the good news, I told him, “You’re my hero!” to which he responded, “Some heroes don’t wear capes!”  Winking smile)

Though I covered the DeMille Estate’s history in my previous post on the pad, I figure a brief recap is in order here.  Built in 1914, the Beaux Arts-style dwelling was originally designed by architect B. Cooper Corbette for Homer Laughlin, co-developer of Los Feliz’ exclusive Laughlin Park community.  Homer did not live at the site long, selling the massive manse to DeMille in 1916 for $27,893.  Five years later, the famed director acquired the home next door – formerly occupied by Charlie Chaplin – and connected the two with an atrium-like breezeway, meshing them into one ridiculously large compound with the Chaplin portion serving as a screening room/offices/guest quarters.  Cecil remained on the premises until his passing in 1959.  His estate then held onto the property for the next three decades, reportedly changing nothing from the time DeMille called it home, even going so far as to put fresh flowers on his desk daily.  The compound was eventually sold to attorney Terry O’Toole and his wife, Evelyn, in 1988.  According to a few articles I dug up via newspapers.com (which I cannot link to as a subscription is needed to view them), the couple briefly updated the estate before selling it to a Japanese company in 1990.

In 1996, the hilltop abode was purchased by art consultant/curator Lisa Lyons and her husband, art consultant/writer Richard Grossman.  Prolific rehabbers, the couple enlisted architect Brian Tichenor of Tichenor & Thorp to separate and restore the two properties, first the Chaplin home (which they subsequently sold to producer/writer John Wells) and then the DeMille Estate.  The renovation of the latter took a whopping six years.  You can read a great Town & Country article about the extensive restoration here.

Grossman and Lyons put the 6-bedroom, 10-bath, 7,472-square-foot pad (which also boasts a pool, a pool house/gym, a detached studio, a rose garden, arched windows, iron balconies, molded ceilings, Doric columns, a mahogany-paneled dining room, a formal library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a whopping 2.1 acres of land) up for sale in 2008 for $26.25 million.  There were no takers, though, so the listing was removed the following year.  It then hit the market again in early 2017 (you can check out the MLS photos here), this time selling after just a couple of months for $24.5 million to none other than Angelina Jolie.  Considering Laughlin Park’s long tenure as a celebrity enclave, the purchase was not surprising.  Besides DeMille, Chaplin and Jolie, just a few of the stars to call the community home over the years include Natalie Portman, Jenna Elfman, Portia de Rossi, W.C. Fields, Carole Lombard, David Fincher, Lauren Graham, and Ellen Pompeo.  Though the neighborhood is gated and not accessible to the public, the Grim Cheaper’s best friend’s parents are longtime residents and we’ve been fortunate to visit many times.  During one of those visits, I did some stalking of the DeMille Estate, which is where the photos in this post come from.  I am so thankful I snapped them, too, because I’m fairly certain getting any pics of the place now would be virtually impossible considering its current resident.

In “Leading from the Heart,” which originally aired in October 1991, Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth) takes a liking to Cousin Bobby, who is visiting from Minnesota, and invites him to a party at her friend Tal Weaver’s house.  As Kelly tells him, “Tal throws the best parties!”

When Kelly, Bobby and the rest of their group arrive, though, trouble ensues as the only way to gain entrance to the soiree is via a massive set of exterior steps that leads to Tal’s front door.

So it’s Brandon, Steve Sanders (Ian Ziering) and Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) to the rescue!  With Brenda and Kelly clearing a path, the three carry Bobby up the steps.

As you can see in the screen captures below (as well as the many above) as compared to the photographs above, when 90210 was filmed on the premises 27 years ago, the DeMille Estate was enclosed with fencing mainly consisting of wrought iron.  Though the posts remain, the ironwork has since been replaced with a stucco wall and wooden gates, making the front steps much less visible – which is perhaps why I didn’t recognize the place as Tal Weaver’s pad.  (Yeah, I’ll just keep telling myself that. Winking smile)

Things don’t improve much for poor Cousin Bobby upon venturing inside Tal’s residence, for which the real interior of the DeMille Estate was utilized.

Not only does someone fall onto Bobby’s lap and accidentally spill a drink on him, but Tal asks Kelly to dance, which sends Bobby into an ugly downward spiral.  It is not long before he begs Steve, Dylan and Brandon to carry him back down the steps so that he can call a cab and leave.  While re-watching the episode, I came to the conclusion that Cousin Bobby is actually kind of a jerk.  Pretty much everyone he encounters at the party is incredibly friendly, nice, and accommodating (including Tal and the girl who spilled a drink on him), but he is curt and rude (towards Brandon and Steve, too!) and seemingly does his best not to fit in, even going so far as to read Kelly the riot act when (for the first time in the history of the show!) she has not actually done anything wrong.  (I cannot believe I’m defending Kelly here!)  By the time the credits roll, though, all is good again in Walsh-land, Kelly and Bobby have mended fences, and the gang heads out for a drive – with Brenda behind the wheel (gasp!) – before Bobby’s flight back to the Midwest.

I would be remiss if I did not post a photo of Tal in all of his long-haired glory.  The role was actually Gabriel Macht’s first television job and, of the experience, he told BuzzFeed, “I remember Jason Priestley being on his phone a lot and dropping all these F-bombs.  I thought that was funny because he was like America’s apple pie golden boy.  I also remember having no idea what to talk about with Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth while we were hanging around the set.”  So he did what any good theatre student would do – he created a backstory.  In the episode, it is said that Tal and Kelly once attended a Sting concert together, so Macht used that as a jumping-off point.  As he explained to BuzzFeed, “I was coming from theater school, so I was coming up with backstory about our time at the Sting concert and she looked at me like I was crazy.  It was my first TV gig and I wanted him to be this sensitive guy — but I don’t think anyone named Tal Weaver, which is the greatest name in all of television, will ever come across like the good guy.”  (No surprise that Jennie doesn’t sound all that friendly in his story.  Winking smile)

As I mentioned in my original post on the DeMille Estate, the director is reported to have shot the Garden of Gethsemane scenes from his 1927 film The King of Kings on the grounds of the mansion, but, unfortunately, due to the passage of over ninety years time and the fact that the property and its acreage have been extensively renovated, I was unable to verify that.

Tal Weaver's House from Beverly Hills 90210-1705

Stalk It: The Cecil B. DeMille Estate, aka Tal Weaver’s house from the “Leading from the Heart” episode of Beverly Hills, 90210, is located at 2000 De Mille Drive in Los Feliz.  The residence is located in the gated community of Laughlin Park and is, unfortunately, not accessible to the public.

I know I am in the minority when I say I did not like Lady Bird.  Besides confusion over the name (up until I actually popped in the DVD and started watching, I thought the movie was a biopic about Lady Bird Johnson) and a storyline that seemed lacking, I found the main character, Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson (Saoirse Ronan), utterly bratty.  She complains constantly about her hometown and claims she will do anything to go to college far away, yet she doesn’t take action to improve her grades, she cheats (on both a test and by lying to her teacher), lets her recently-out-of-work dad mortgage the family home (behind her mom’s back) in order to pay her out-of-state tuition, and throws tantrums on the reg.  I honestly could not find one redeemable thing about her.  Without a protagonist to root for or at least to sympathize with on some level, my investment in the movie felt like a waste of time.  I was intrigued by the locations, though.  While set and partially shot in Sacramento, I knew upon watching and recognizing the café where Lady Bird worked as Kaldi Coffee and Tea in South Pasadena that some filming took place in Los Angeles, as well.  I was fairly certain that the house where Lady Bird lived with her family – parents Marion (Laurie Metcalf) and Larry (Tracy Letts), brother Miguel (Jordan Rodrigues), and his girlfriend Shelly Yuhan (Marielle Scott) – could also be found in L.A.  So I set out to find it.

One quick stroke of the keypad led me to an Architectural Digest article that stated the McPherson family home was located in Van Nuys.  An address number of “6701” was also visible behind Lady Bird in a scene, so I began searching blocks numbered 6700 in Van Nuys and came across the right spot within minutes.  Said to be on “the wrong side of the tracks” in SacTown in the movie, Lady Bird’s home can actually be found at 6701 Orion Avenue, just east of the 405.

According to the AD article, Lady Bird’s production team scouted no less than fifty different properties before settling on the traditional 2-bedroom, 2-bath, 1952 ranch-style pad pictured below.

Even the interior, which was utilized extensively, was a perfect fit for the production.  As director/writer Greta Gerwig said to The Sacramento Bee, “I was looking for very specific things and it’s so hard to find a home that’s not been renovated.  I had this vision of the kind of California home I wanted, like specific wide colorful tiles in the bathroom and kitchen.”

Prior to securing locales, Gerwig took the production team to her childhood home to give them an idea of the look she was going for.  In a lucky and rather eerie twist, the Van Nuys house boasted that aesthetic naturally – and in spades.  As production designer Chris Jones explained to Architectural Digest, “It was really bizarre because the kitchen looks almost exactly like Greta’s kitchen growing up.   It’s an almost exact match, down to the yellow tiles on the wall.”  The space actually reminds me quite a bit of the Arnolds’ kitchen from the pilot episode of The Wonder Years.

Per AD, while most of the furniture seen onscreen was brought in for the shoot, the faux wood paneling was another of the home’s authentic features.

Jones calls the house “a great find” saying it became a “character in the movie.”

The 1,607 square feet of living space did prove rather cramped for cast and crew, though.  Jones told Deadline, “Working in the house was tight.  Everyone was crammed in this small, square footage house.  Fortunately, that house had a back area, which actually ended up being the dorm rooms for when she goes to New York.  The whole yard was taken over by the film shoot for a week and a half.”  Lady Bird’s dorm is pictured below.  From Jones’ words, I am unclear if an actual room in the Van Nuys residence was utilized for the segment (with a New York cityscape splayed across the window) or if the space was a set constructed in the backyard or some other rear portion of the property.

The Lady Bird house also popped up in the Season 6 episode of Californication titled “Blind Faith” as the residence belonging to Faith’s (Maggie Grace) parents.

The “She’s Out of Control” House – Part 2

One of my favorite parts of writing my blog each day is uncovering the various productions a particular locale has appeared in.  Some spots are so prevalent on the big and small screen that I inevitably miss a role or two, though.  Such was the case with the South Pasadena pad that portrayed the home of the Simpson family in the 1989 coming-of-age comedy She’s Out of Control, one of my very favorite flicks of the era.  A couple of months after publishing my post on the property in 2011, I spotted it in Bruce Almighty (as I mentioned here).  Then this past December, fellow stalker David, from The Location Scout, published a comment on my site alerting me to the fact that the dwelling had also been featured in Star Kid.  When Mike, from MovieShotsLA, texted me not more than two days later to inform me that he had also noticed the place pop up in Little Fockers, I just about fell over and decided it was definitely time for a redux!  So here goes!

Considering the home’s vast Anywhere, U.S.A.-aesthetic and obvious curb appeal, it is not hard to see why location managers have flocked to it like moths to a flame.

Per Zillow, the 2-story 1908 pad boasts 4 bedrooms, 1 bath, 2,800 square feet of living space, and a 0.17-acre lot.

The picturesque property last sold in 1979 for $140,000 and today is worth an estimated $1.6 million, according to Redfin.  Not a bad ROI, especially considering all the film income the place has generated over the years!

   In She’s Out of Control, the residence is where newly-made-over teen Katie Simpson (Ami Dolenz) lives with her long-suffering father, Doug (Tony Danza), and smart aleck younger sister, Bonnie (Laura Mooney).

Amazingly, the property still looks exactly the same today as it did when the movie was filmed almost thirty years ago.  Talk about being frozen in time!  I mean, the trees don’t even appear to have grown in the past three decades!

  Only the exterior of the residence was utilized in She’s Out of Control.  The interior of the Simpson home was nothing more than a studio-built set.

I cannot even express what a shame it is that Katie’s famous staircase doesn’t exist in real life.  If it did and I lived in that house, I’d so have Frankie Avalon’s “Venus” playing on loop!  The dwelling’s actual staircase is much less impressive than its onscreen counterpart, sadly, and leads both upstairs and into the kitchen, oddly enough.  Regardless, the residence is quite charming inside.  You can check out some photographs of it here.

In the 1997 family flick Star Kid, the abode portrays the Griffith family residence, where Spencer (Joseph Mazzello) lives with his father, Roland (Richard Gilliland), and sister, Stacey (Ashlee Levitch).

Though interiors were filmed on a set, said set very closely resembled the actual inside of the house.

The pad also masquerades as the supposed Buffalo, New York-area home belonging to Debbie (Lisa Ann Walter), Grace Connelly’s (Jennifer Aniston) sister, in the 2003 comedy Bruce Almighty.

I absolutely love this candid shot of Jennifer Aniston and director Tom Shadyac taken out in front of the house during the shoot.

As I mentioned in my original 2011 post, the property serves as the Doyle residence, where Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) babysits Tommy Doyle (Skyler Gisondo), in Rob Zombie’s 2007 horror flick Halloween.

In the 2010 comedy Little Fockers, the dwelling masks as the Chicago-area “American foursquare” (“also known as a prairie box”) that Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) and his wife, Pam (Teri Polo), are renovating.

The “L.A. Confidential” Christmas Eve Pot Bust House

Some might not consider the subject of today’s post a Christmas location.  It’s certainly not from a holiday flick, that’s for sure.  But the scene that was shot there took place on Christmas Eve, so I figured it was fair game.  For those who do not recognize the pad pictured above, it was at the two-story Craftsman that the infamous “movie premiere pot bust” – or as I always refer to it, the “Christmas Eve pot bust” – from L.A. Confidential was lensed.  If you’ve never seen the 1997 film (and I just learned that the Grim Cheaper counts himself in that category, which absolutely flabbergasted me!), I’ll fill you in.

At the beginning of the 1950s-set drama, Hush-Hush tabloid reporter Sid Hudgens (Danny DeVito) convinces LAPD sergeant Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) to arrest two Metro Studio contract players, Matt Reynolds (Simon Baker) and Tammy Jordan (Shawnee Free Jones), whom he has set up for pot possession, so that he can document the whole thing for his magazine.  When they arrive at Reynolds’ home, Vincennes, ever the media opportunist, immediately notices that a Hollywood premiere is taking place at the theatre down the street and instructs Sid, “Put your camera right there.  When I walk out, I’ll stop right here, you get the movie premiere in the background.”  To which Sid says, “I like it!  I like it!  The movie premiere pot bust!”  (Why a film premiere would be taking place on Christmas Eve night is beyond me, but I guess that is a question for director/screenwriter Curtis Hanson.)  As Sid later spins the story, “It’s Christmas Eve in the City of Angels and while decent citizens sleep the sleep of the righteous, hopheads prowl for marijuana, not knowing that a man is coming to stop them – celebrity crime stopper Jack Vincennes, scourge of grasshoppers and dope fiends everywhere.”

Because of the tight angle from which the scene was shot, as well as the low lighting (not to mention a change in paint color in the ensuing years), the movie premiere pot bust house looks quite a bit different in person than it did onscreen.

While it deceivingly looks like a single-family residence from the street, as was depicted in L.A. Confidential the 1914 property is actually a multi-occupancy dwelling.  Per Zillow, the structure boasts a total of 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, 3,304 square feet, and a 0.23-acre parcel of land.

Though they are now largely obscured by a screened-in porch, you can just make out the property’s two front doors in my photograph below.

The home’s actual interior was also utilized in the movie.  It is there that Vincennes (does L.A. Confidential have great character names, or what?) first learns about Fleur-de-Lis thanks to a mysterious black business card he finds tucked away in a notebook.

Though the scene taking place there is rather brief, the pot bust house was one of the tougher locales for the L.A. Confidential production team to nail down.  According to an interview with location manager John Panzarella and key assistant Leslie Thorson that ran in L.A. Weekly this past September, early versions of the script called for a residence within view of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.  Panzarella says, “Our directive always was to have a theater that was in a sightline to a house, like half a block away.  We did go look at the Chinese Theatre, we went down Sycamore, we went down Orange, we went down all the adjacent streets and there was no house there that was within sightlines.”  So they started seeking out other venues – in Leimert Park, Westwood, and additional areas of L.A.  But they came up with zilch.  That’s when production designer Jeannine Oppewall stepped in and saved the day by proposing that an old Art Deco bank building at 5620 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood could possibly mask as a theatre in the scene.  Her idea was right on the money and Panzarella and Thorson soon zeroed in on a home with period-perfect architecture located just down the street from the structure at 1714 North Gramercy Place to portray Reynolds’ residence.

Transforming the bank building into the fictional “El Cortez” theatre for the shoot did prove a bit challenging, as the owners of the structure would not allow anything to be attached to the façade.  So Oppewall had to think outside the box.  As she explained to Curbed L.A. in a recent interview, “What I ended up doing was designing the movie marquee as a freestanding triangle.  We shoved it up against the building, and then we built two pilasters on the back two legs that disappeared directly into the background of the building . . . And we had to have a supporting pillar in the front, which we painted black.  I specified that we had to always have some extras standing directly in front of it so you wouldn’t see that it was actually standing on three legs.”

Known as the California Bank/Precision Auto Building in real life (per this Historic Resources Survey Report), the structure was designed by John Parkinson of Parkinson & Parkinson, the father-and-son architecture team who also gave us Union Station, Bullocks Wilshire and both Security Trust & Savings Bank’s Highland Park Branch and North Hollywood BranchAccording to the Los Angeles Times, the site, which boasts a 95-foot-tall pyramid-topped tower, was built in 1920 (though many others report the year of construction as 1929).  Said tower was badly damaged during the Northridge earthquake in 1994.  Though it has, thankfully, since been repaired, you can check out some eerie photographs of its toppled spire here and here.

I, along with the rest of the world, became absolutely transfixed by the first season of Serial, the 2014 podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig which detailed the murder of Baltimore teenager Hae Min Lee and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed for the killing.  Not only did the Grim Cheaper and I listen to the entire thing three times through, but we also voraciously devoured Truth and Justice (née Serial Dynasty) and Undisclosed, two of Serial’s unaffiliated offshoots that further investigated the crime.  Since then, I have constantly been on the lookout for other engrossing podcasts, but finding ones that fit the bill has proved difficult.  Some, like In the Dark and Accused, definitely hit the mark.  Others like Someone Knows Something and My Favorite Murder were horribly disappointing (though to be fair I only listened the first season of the former).  Then in February of this year, Missing Richard Simmons dropped and I felt as if my prayers had been answered!  The GC and I couldn’t get enough!  Created by director/producer Dan Taberski, a close friend of the eccentric fitness guru, the series is extremely well-executed, intelligently written, and absolutely gripping.  Prior to the podcast, I knew very little about Simmons and never would have thought he’d be someone I’d be interested in listening to 3.5 hours worth of dialog on, but thanks to Taberski’s engaging narrative, I was hooked right from the start.  At the forefront of the story is Richard’s palatial Hollywood Hills West mansion.  So I, of course, just had to stalk the place.

For those who haven’t listened to Finding Richard Simmons (and if not, you really should!) and don’t know much about the mystery shrouding the icon’s life as of late, I’ll break it down for you.  On February 15th, 2014, Richard did not show up for the exercise class he had been teaching thrice weekly at Slimmons, his Beverly Hills studio, since 1974.  No explanation was given – nor was one given when he failed to show up the following week.  At the same time, Simmons also cut off ties to his legions of regulars and, from what it seems, all of his close friends, including Taberski.  His calls, emails, and texts just ceased.  He also stopped talking to the media, stopped giving interviews, and stopped doing promotions.  Richard Simmons hasn’t been seen in public since (unless you count his blanket-covered homecoming after a four-day visit to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in April 2017).  Reportedly holing up in his Colonial-style mansion, rarely (if ever) venturing past the fence line, the star pulled a gone guy – with his longtime housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, acting as a gatekeeper.  Friends, colleagues, and fans were understandably concerned and attempted to get in touch.  Richard wasn’t talking, though.  According to the podcast, outside of his brother, manager, publicist, a friend in Minnesota, and Teresa, Simmons went radio silent on the world.

Why the silence?  Why the hiding?  Why the mystery?  That is what Taberski sought to find out.  And he left no stone unturned in his quest for the truth – contacting countless friends and associates of Richard’s, traveling to New Orleans to interview his brother, and showing up at Simmons’ house (where he used to be a frequent guest) a couple of times unannounced.  All of it is recorded, documented, and broadcast to tantalizing effect in the podcast.  On his trek to the massive dwelling during the taping of episode 1, titled “Where’s Richard?”, Dan is shocked to discover that a 6-foot wall has been erected around the residence since the last time he visited.  As you can see in the Google Street View images below from June 2011 and May 2014, while there has always been a fence surrounding Simmons’ home, since his self-imposed exile, a secondary barricade, one built of concrete, has replaced the white picket enclosure that once ran along the property line.  The result is a house that is much less accessible and welcoming, which I’m sure is the point.

A funny side-note – Teresa, Richard’s housekeeper who I mentioned earlier and who figures prominently in Missing Richard Simmons, is visible moving Simmons’ trash cans (just as she did during Taberski’s second visit to the house in episode 2, “Stakeout”) in Google’s Street View imagery from November 2015.

According to the Mary Cummins website, Richard purchased the two-story residence in 1982 for $670,000.

Per Zillow, the 1937 pad, which features 4 bedrooms, 5 baths, 4,119 square feet of living space, a 0.56-acre lot, and a 2-car detached garage, is worth a whopping $5.2 million today.

The property also boasts a massive black-bottom swimming pool, as you can see in the aerial view below.

Though definitely ornate, the house is not nearly as over-the-top and ostentatious as one would expect considering its owner.

Simmons has been known to give the place its own grandiose spin, though.  As Taberski says in episode 1, “He loves to tell people his house was featured as a plantation house stand-in in the opening credits of Gone with the Wind, but I’m gonna call bullshit on that one.”  Dan was probably smart to do so.  I did the legwork and watched the GWTW credits and while Richard’s residence does bear a striking resemblance to a property featured in it (pictured below), I do not believe the two are one and the same.

I was most excited to check out the home’s mailbox, which, as noted in the podcast, boasts a touch of the star’s ostentatious flair and is, thankfully, still visible from the street despite the new fencing.  As you can see below, the letter drop is a miniature replica of Simmons’ antebellum mansion.

So what is the outcome of Taberski’s quest, you ask?  Does he get to the bottom of the icon’s disappearance?  How does Missing Richard Simmons end?  Sadly, Dan does not really uncover any definitive answers.  All he hears over and over again is that Richard is tired and wants to retreat from public life – which he is perfectly entitled to do.  But to do so by cutting off ties to virtually everyone he has ever been close with and essentially becoming a recluse overnight?  Well, that smacks of something problematic (in my opinion, at least).  What that something is, I have no idea.  But I don’t begrudge Dan – or the rest of Richard’s friends – for wanting to find out.  And though the podcast was met with quite a bit of controversy, I believe Taberski’s intentions were pure.  He just wanted to make sure that Simmons, someone he cares a lot about, is OK.  In doing so, he created a podcast that showcases the amazing person that Richard is.  Prior to listening, I had no idea of Simmons’ incredible generosity and kindness, nor his astute business sense.  All I really knew of the guru centered around his eccentricity, his love of costumes, and the fortune he made sweatin’ to the oldies.  Dan taught me – and legions of other listeners – that Richard is so much more.  I hope that whatever he is currently doing and for whatever reasons he is doing it, that he is happy.

Considering I’ve been stalking full-time for close to a decade and annually covering Haunted Hollywood locales for just about as long, you’d think I’d have the market on spooky sites cornered by now.  That is definitely not the case, though.  I am continuously discovering new-to-me spots, scary and otherwise, which speaks more to the vast history and landscape of Los Angeles than anything else.  There’s always somewhere fresh to be explored in this magical place we call LaLaLand.  One frequent horror film star that I only just learned about is the Smith Estate, a historic Highland Park Victorian so sufficiently looming and mysterious I fell in love with it upon sight.  The pad literally looks like it was ripped right off a scary movie screen – so much so that I couldn’t help but pretend to be screaming in my ubiquitous header photo.

The Smith Estate was originally built in 1887 for David P. Hatch, a practicing judge who also wrote books on the occult (fitting, considering his home!).  I first came across information about the striking Queen Anne-style residence, which can be found at 5905 El Mio Drive, while researching the Finis E. Yoakum House, another Highland Park horror film regular that I blogged about here.

In the 1890s, the 4,528-square-foot, 6-bedroom, 3-bath pad, which sits on a 0.53-acre lot, was sold to Charles Smith, who ran the Los Angeles Railway’s Yellow Car trolley system.  The Smith family continued to live on the premises through the late 1950s, garnering the home the moniker it is still known by today.  (The house is also sometimes referred to as “El Mio,” after the street it is located on.)

In 1988, after a succession of different occupants, then L.A. deputy mayor Michael Gage and his wife, Lacey, purchased the Smith Estate, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

The Gages sold the dwelling to its current owners in 1997 for $290,000.  Zillow estimates the property’s worth at just over $2 million today!

Situated atop a towering butte, the Smith Estate seems to loom over the entire city.  As I got out of the car and walked up to it, all I could think was, ‘This is a real life house on Haunted Hill!’

Because of its elevated layout, the property can be viewed from all sides, which made for an unusual stalk.

Toward the lower portion of the sloped lot, we came across what we believe to be the home’s original garage.  Because of the way it is situated, I am guessing that there is, or at least was at one time, some sort of underground passage leading from the garage to the residence.

At the front of the house is an adorable in-law unit situated above the property’s detached three-car garage.

Due to its aesthetic, it is not hard to see how the home came to be a favorite of horror movie directors.

The Smith Estate’s most famous onscreen appearance is in 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, in which it portrays the residence of Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey), where Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), his wife, Renai (Rose Byrne), and their children move after having to leave their own house due to the events of the first film.

According to the movie’s production notes, director James Wan said of the property, “This was an amazing location.  It’s really cool because the house is situated on the top of a mountain and the surrounding neighborhood houses are literally underneath it, so it is an amazing vantage point for views around Los Angeles.”  The pad’s hill top locale truly does give its such a fabulously imposing presence.  It would have such a different feel to it if it was situated on flat land.

The Smith Estate looks much the same in person as it did onscreen.  Not much set decoration is needed to give the place that chilling quality horror flicks require.

The real life interior of the home was used in Insidious: Chapter 2, as well.  Shooting on the premises really helped Rose Byrne get into character.  In the production notes, she is quoted as saying, “These places they find are very eerie and weird, and dark and low-ceilinged, and that for me is very scary.  I just think, ‘How could you live in this house?’  It’s just my sensibility; I’m just way too sensitive for it.  Even more than the ghosts and all those sequences, it’s the houses that get me.”  Me, too, Rose.  Me too!

In 1967’s Spider Baby, aka The Maddest Story Ever Told, the Smith Estate plays the role of the Merrye (pronounced “Mary”) House, home of the Merrye family, history’s only sufferers of Merrye Syndrome – “a progressive age regression” causing victims to retreat “beyond the prenatal level, reverting to a pre-human condition of savagery and cannibalism.”  Yeah, I know – sounds like a real winner of a movie.  Winking smile

The Smith Estate also portrays the mysterious residence that college student Scotty Parker (Rebecca Balding) moves into in 1979’s The Silent Scream, though the property is made to appear as if it is situated on the coast in the flick.

Unless the dwelling underwent a serious renovation after The Silent Scream was filmed, it seems that only its exterior was utilized in the flick.  As you can see in the screen captures below as compared to the video I linked to earlier, not only is The Silent Scream home’s main stairwell in a completely different place than that of the Smith Estate, but the two interiors just don’t seem to match at all.
