The “Why Him?” Gate House

Laird Mayhew's Gate from Why Him-7877

Location managers can be such tricksters!  And there’s pretty much nothing I love more than uncovering the various fabrications that go into a particular locale.  Such was the case with the gate house supposedly situated at the entrance to the massive manse belonging to millionaire video game creator Laird Mayhew (James Franco) in Why Him?  The Grim Cheaper and I recently watched – and thoroughly enjoyed – the 2016 comedy and I went on an immediate quest to track down some of its filming sites.  Thanks to the Global Film Locations website, I quickly homed in on Laird’s sprawling estate, which is known as the Summit House in real life.  One look at the place on Google Street View, though, told me that Laird’s quaint ranch-style gate house could not be found anywhere on the premises.  Ah, the magic of Hollywood!  So I set out to find it.  And find it, I did.

[ad]

Thankfully, an address number of 2253 was visible outside of the gate house on the mailbox containing Laird’s facial recognition security device.  I figured that the mailbox and address number were real and began searching for homes with 2253 addresses, first in Beverly Hills near the Summit House and then slowly working my way outward.  I eventually found the right spot about seven miles away at 2253 Linda Flora Drive in Bel Air.

Screenshot-004524

As I plopped down into Street View, I was shocked to discover that the mailbox that had facilitated my search was not there in real life!  Turns out it was a prop that had been inexplicably fashioned with the home’s real life address for the shoot!

Laird Mayhew's Gate from Why Him-7887

I was further surprised to see that the driveway where the mailbox was placed as well as the gate situated beyond it belong to the neighboring property located at 2251 Linda Flora Drive.  So two residences were used to represent Laird’s gate house in Why Him?  The trickery was strong with this locale!

Laird Mayhew's Gate from Why Him-7886

The gate house only pops up briefly in Why Him?, in a beginning scene in which Stephanie Fleming (Zoey Deutch) brings her parents, Ned (Bryan Cranston) and Barb (Megan Mullally), and brother, Scotty (Griffin Gluck), to her boyfriend Laird’s home for the first time.  As they arrive, Barb, mistakenly thinking that the charming dwelling they pull up to is Laird’s residence, says, “Oh, this is cute.”  To which Stephanie explains, “Actually, this is the gate house.”  As you can see, the gate house was changed a bit for the shoot.  A fence was added to the perimeter of the front yard, a window was installed on the side of the pad, and quite a few trees, shrubs and plants, as well as a garden gnome, were brought in.

Screenshot-004525

Laird Mayhew's Gate from Why Him-7868

Producers also had the gate itself altered for the shoot, completely covering it over with foliage, which nearly obscured it from view.  As Barb says when the gate opens upon the Fleming family’s arrival, “The hedge is moving!”

In real life, Laird’s gate house is a regular single family home that boasts 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and 1,560 square feet.

The driveway and gate next door lead to a newly-built modern residence that boasts 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, 9,300 square feet, a 3.2-acre plot of land, travertine stonework, disappearing glass doors, two separate lawn areas, a detached guest house, a 3-car garage, a reflecting pool surrounded by a pool deck, 14-foot high ceilings, a massive skylight, a chef’s kitchen with Miele and Wolf appliances and electrically-controlled drawers, a library with a glass floor, a wine room, several fireplaces, and a 1,000-foot-long driveway.

The “License to Drive” Party House

License to Drive Party House (3 of 12)

Another License to Drive location that I was finally able to cross off my To-Stalk list while visiting L.A. a couple of weeks ago was the house where Les Anderson (Corey Haim), Dean (Corey Feldman) and Charles (Michael Manasseri) attended a birthday party in the 1988 flick, which was one of my all-time favorites.  Mike, from MovieShotsLA, actually tracked this spot down ages ago (way back in 2008, shortly after finding Les’ house from the movie, which I blogged about here), but, for whatever reason, it took me over four years to make it out there.  Better late than never, though, right?

[ad]

Mike found the residence thanks to both an address number of “340” . . .

ScreenShot299

. . . and a blurry sign from a neighboring street reading “Delfern Drive” that were visible in the background of the party scene.

ScreenShot298

The residence was only featured once, towards the beginning of License to Drive, in the scene in which Mercedes Lane (Heather Graham) talks to Les for the first time and winds up (sort of) asking him out on a date.  In the movie’s DVD commentary, writer Neil Tolkin states that he often drives his kids by the house “to tell them how great things were at one point.”  I am unsure of what he means by that exactly, but I absolutely love that he takes his children to stalk the place on a regular basis.

ScreenShot295

License to Drive Party House (1 of 12)

Sadly, the dwelling is a lot less visible from the road now than it was when the movie was filmed.  As you can see below, while a tall wall currently surrounds the property, at the time that License to Drive was shot, there was only a small hedge lining the perimeter.  Boo!

ScreenShot294

License to Drive Party House (2 of 12)

And while the circular driveway used to be open to the street, it is now secured by a gate at both ends.  Again, boo!

You can still catch a small glimpse of the roofline, though, so at least there’s that.

License to Drive Party House (5 of 12)

I am fairly certain that the real life interior of the house was also used in the production.  According to the DVD commentary, the party scene actually had to be re-shot at one point because Fox executives thought the extras used in the initial filming looked too old to be high school students.

ScreenShot297

ScreenShot296

In real life, the residence, which was built in 1937, boasts seven bedrooms, ten baths, 8,532 square feet of living space, and a 0.95-acre corner plot of land.  It last sold in June 1994 for $2,750,000 and, according to the BlockShopper website, once belonged to prolific film and television producer David L. Wolper.

The “Pretty Woman” Party House

P1030108

Over the past few weeks, fellow stalker Mike, from MovieShotsLA, and I have been on an extensive hunt for several unfound locations from the 1990 classic romantic comedy Pretty Woman. And the locale that I was most interested in tracking down, you ask?  Why, the huge, modern-style abode where Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) attended a party in the film’s opening scene, of course.  You all know how this stalker absolutely loves herself some movies houses!  Anyway, after doing some extensive digging online, purchasing the Pretty Woman 15th Anniversary Special Edition DVD, watching each and every one of the special features included in it, and still coming up completely empty-handed, Mike decided that we had to change our course.

ScreenShot3298 ScreenShot3297

Mike had noticed a smattering of tall buildings in the background of the Pretty Woman party scene and, although the view of them was not entirely clear, he had a hunch that they were located in Century City.

Pretty Woman Party House map

So using an aerial map of West Los Angeles, he drew an angled line based on those views from Century City outward and it led him straight to the hills of Bel Air.  He then zoomed in on the spot where the line had pointed and immediately noticed a huge white mansion that was very reminiscent of the Pretty Woman party house.  And, sure enough, upon closer inspection, he found that it was, indeed, the right place!  Wahoo!  So I dragged the Grim Cheaper right on out there to stalk the place this past weekend.

ScreenShot3308 ScreenShot3306

The opening scene of Pretty Woman centered around a party held at a large house high up in the hills above Hollywood, thrown in honor of Edward’s arrival in Los Angeles.  I believe that the residence was supposed to belong to Edward’s lawyer, Philip Stuckey (Jason Alexander), in the flick, but that was never actually specified.

P1030105 P1030104

P1030107 P1030106

Sadly, not very much of the property is visible from the street, but, as you can see above, the bush where the valet stand was placed, the double windows located above the garage, the brick driveway, and the bent tree on the side of the driveway, all still look exactly the same as they did onscreen way back in 1990.  So incredibly cool!  In real life, the Pretty Woman party house, which was originally built in 1988 and sits on an almost 3/4-acre plot of land, measures 5 bedrooms, 8 baths, and a whopping 10,650 square feet of living space.

ScreenShot3295 ScreenShot3296

As you can see in the above aerial views, both the home and its surrounding property are absolutely ginormous!

ScreenShot3300 ScreenShot3302

ScreenShot3303 ScreenShot3304

According to director Garry Marshall’s commentary on the Pretty Woman 15th Anniversary Special Edition DVD (which I highly recommend, by the way – the special features are fabulous!), the real life interior of the home was also used in the filming.  Man, what I wouldn’t give to see the inside of that place!

Amazingly, when Mike went to stalk the house a few days after I had, the gate just happened to be open and he was able to snap a few pictures of the front of it!  WHOO-HOO!

Marco Salazar’s Pretend House from “90210”

90210-marcos-house-1

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, located directly across the street from the house belonging to Marla Templeton (aka Sally Kellerman) on fave show 90210 is the mansion where Marco Salazar (aka Freddie Smith) pretended to live in the Season 3 episode of the series titled “Women On The Verge”.  So after stalking Marla’s home this past Saturday afternoon, the Grim Cheaper and I walked right on over to Marco’s faux abode to snap a few pics of the place.  I found this location, yet again, thanks to fellow stalker Geoff, from the 90210Locations website, who somehow managed to track the residence down long before the “Woman On The Verge” episode even aired.  How did he do that, you ask?  Well, this past March, one of the directors of 90210, whom Geoff follows on Twitter (@90210director), tweeted a photograph of the mansion while he was doing some editing of the show.  Geoff took one look at that photograph and immediately set about trying to find the place.  And find it, he did – that very day.  Being that the picture that @90210director tweeted showed an extremely limited view of the property, I was absolutely SHOCKED when Geoff emailed me to let me know that he had found it.  Especially considering that he found it in Bel Air, which is the absolute LAST place on earth  that I ever would have thought to look.  Due to the mansion’s newer-looking construction, I would have assumed that it was located somewhere in the Encino area, so my hat is DEFINITELY off to Geoff on this one!

90210-marcos-house-3 90210-marcos-house-6

Marco’s faux residence is actually not just a filming location, but a former celebrity home as well.  According to my good friend E.J. over at The Movieland Directory website, the property was where legendary singer Peggy Lee, of “Fever” and “Why Don’t You Do Right” fame, lived during her later years and was also where the crooner sadly passed away on January 21, 2002 after suffering from a heart attack.

ScreenCap1788

Sadly though, as you can see in the above aerial view, the property has been extensively remodeled in recent years and no longer looks the same as it did when Peggy Lee lived there.  In real life, the Tuscan-style mansion, which was originally built in 1969, boasts 4 bedrooms, 5 baths, and a whopping 6,052 square feet of living space.

ScreenCap1779 ScreenCap1780

ScreenCap1782 ScreenCap1783

The property first popped up towards the beginning of the “Woman On The Verge” episode of 90210, in the scene in which Teddy Montgomery (aka Trevor Donovan) picks up his new boyfriend, Marco, whom he believes lives on the premises, for a date.

ScreenCap1784 ScreenCap1785

ScreenCap1786 ScreenCap1787

Later on in the episode, Teddy returns to the mansion in order to confront Marco after discovering that he has been lying to him about his whereabouts.  It is then that Teddy meets the home’s actual owner and learns that Marco does not, in fact, live there at all, but that his mother is employed at the property as a housekeeper.  Can you say drama?!?

Big THANK YOU to fellow stalker Geoff, from the 90210Locations website, for finding this location!  Smile

Stalk It: Marco Salazar’s pretend house from 90210 is located at 11404 Bellagio Road in Bel Air.  Here is a link to the property’s location on Bing Maps.  (Special thanks to fellow stalker John, from the Bay Area, who suggested that I include a map link in all of my posts, which I will be doing from this point forward.  SmileMarla Templeton’s house from 90210 is located just across the street from Marco’s at 542 Bellagio Terrace.  Here is a map link to that location.

Marla Templeton’s House from “90210”

90210-marla-templeton-house-1

Last week, fellow stalker Geoff, from the 90210Locations website, emailed me to let me know that he had just tracked down the home where actress Marla Templeton (aka Sally Kellerman, who is best known for playing the role of Major Margaret “Hot Lips” O’Houlihan in the 1970 movie MASH) lived in the Season 3 episodes of fave show 90210 titled “Nerdy Little Secrets” and “Women On The Verge”.  Marla’s house had such a fabulous sense of charm and almost seemed to be a character in and of itself in the episodes that I fell in love with the place pretty much upon site and was absolutely dying to know of its real-life location.  So you can imagine my excitement when I read Geoff’s email and discovered that he had somehow managed to track it down.  Geoff had actually first tracked down the home where Marco Salazar (aka Freddie Smith), the new love interest of Teddy Montgomery (aka Trevor Donovan), had pretended to live in the “Woman on the Verge” episode – a location which I will be blogging about tomorrow – and, as fate would have it, while looking at aerial views of the place, happened to spot Marla’s abode located directly across the street.  Yay!  So I dragged the Grim Cheaper right on out to stalk the place this past weekend.

90210-marla-templeton-house-6 90210-marla-templeton-house-2

Sadly, as you can see in the above photographs, Marla’s house is located at the end of a very long, very secluded driveway and not much of the property is visible from the street.  But, as I’ve said before, that is why God created real estate listings!  The mid-century-modern-style residence, which was built in 1964 and boasts 3 bedrooms, 5 baths, 3,998 square feet of living space, an elevated dining room, an outdoor bar complete with flat screen TV, wood-beamed ceilings, a large pool, and amazing views of the city of L.A., was recently listed for sale for a cool $5,995,000.  You can check out the listing, which has some fabulous close-up and interior photographs of the property, here

In the Season 3 episode of 90210 titled “Nerdy Little Secrets”, Annie Wilson (aka Shenae Grimes), who is looking for a way to make some money before heading off to college, applies for a job as a personal assistant to a glamorous elderly woman named Marla Templeton.  Marla is a bit of a hoarder and she winds up hiring Annie – at $1,000 a week! – to organize and catalog the many items that she has collected over the years.  Annie later finds out that Marla was, at one time, an extremely famous actress and the two women end up bonding over their shared love of old Hollywood.

Both the interior and the exterior of Marla’s house were used quite extensively in the episode.

And the property’s A-MA-ZING backyard also made an appearance.

ScreenCap1766 ScreenCap1768

The dwelling then popped up again in the following week’s episode of 90210 titled “Women On The Verge”, in which Annie not only finds out that Marla is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, but that she is also planning on committing suicide in the very near future.

ScreenCap1774 ScreenCap1776

ScreenCap1777 ScreenCap1778

Both the interior and the exterior of the property were featured in “Women On The Verge”, which, while depressing, was one of my favorite episodes of the entire season.  In my never-to-be-humble opinion, I thought Shenae Grimes did some of her best acting to date in the episode, especially in the very last scene.  Sigh!  Love her!  But I digress.  Anyway 90210 costume designer Kime Buzzelli, whom I follow on Twitter (@kbuzzy), recently tweeted a photograph that she took of the living room area of the home while it was dressed for the filming of the show, which you can check out here.  So incredibly cool!

The “Spanglish” House

P1000940

The Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby, British Columbia, which I blogged about yesterday, was actually the very last Vancouver locale that I had logged away in my location library and, while I have a slew of Seattle area spots that I have yet to write about, I thought that for today I’d mix things up a bit by posting about a location that can be found right here in Southern California.  So enjoy!  A few weeks ago, fellow stalker Nick emailed me to let me know that he was in the process of trying to track down the residence belonging to John and Deborah Clasky (played by Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni, respectively) in the 2004 movie Spanglish.  I was extremely excited upon hearing about this endeavor as the Spanglish house is one that I’ve long been wanting to stalk.  Unfortunately, though, my father was in the hospital on the day that Nick emailed me, so I wasn’t able to offer him much help in the hunt.  As it turns out, though, he didn’t need my assistance, after all, because less than 24 hours later he emailed me back with an address!  Nick had read on IMDB’s Spanglish filming locations page that some filming of the movie had taken place on Stone Canyon Road in Bel Air, so he immediately got to searching the area via Google Street View and, lo and behold, found the house!  YAY!  Thank you, Nick!

P1000943 P1000945

P1000946 P1000949

So, since things have calmed down considerably regarding my dad’s health in recent weeks (he just had his final surgery to implant the permanent nerve block device last Friday evening and is feeling great!), I was finally able to drag my fiancé out to stalk the Spanglish house this past Saturday afternoon.  Sadly, though, due to a large gate and massive amounts of foliage, not a whole lot of it is visible from the street.

ScreenShot4847 ScreenShot4848

I am happy to report, though, that what was visible looks much the same as it did in the movie.  🙂

ScreenShot4856 ScreenShot4857

ScreenShot4858 ScreenShot4859

And from the way the movie was shot, I am fairly certain that the real life interior of the house, which boasts 3 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and 4,295 square feet of living space, was used in the filming, as well.

ScreenShot4860 ScreenShot4850

And, as you can see in the above aerial image and screen capture, the home’s real life backyard and pool area were also used in the flick.

.

ScreenShot4851 ScreenShot4852

And while not much of the property could be seen from the street, I must say that the Spanglish house was still very exciting for me to stalk because quite a few scenes from the movie were actually filmed out in front of the residence –

ScreenShot4854 ScreenShot4855

– most notably the scene in which Deborah Clasky and her housekeeper Flor Moreno (aka Paz Vega) engage in a spontaneous foot-race after dropping their kids off at the bus stop on the first day of school.

On a side note – I will not be publishing a new blog post tomorrow, Friday, July 2nd, as I have a bunch of wedding appointments scheduled on the day prior that, unfortunately, will leave me with very little time for blogging.  I’ll be back Monday, though, and in the meantime I’d like to wish all of my fellow stalkers a very happy Fourth of July!  🙂

Big THANK YOU to Nick for finding this location!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Where The American Idol Contestants Live

img_1209-800

screenshot693

Even though American Idol  is not a show I regularly watch, I was completely floored to find a two page article in this week’s US Magazine  featuring the mansion the current Idol contestants are calling home.  I love me some celebrity real estate!   And while US  didn’t give the exact location of the Idol  pad, it did publish several photos of the 35,000 square foot manse and stated that it was located somewhere in Bel Air.  Well I, of course, got to cyberstalking and it wasn’t long before I had located the Mediterranean style home.  And I immediately dragged my boyfriend right out to stalk it.  🙂

screenshot691

screenshot694

In years past, the Idol  contestants were put up in an exclusive apartment building called The Marlow which I blogged about last year.  Well, the economy may be bad, but the Idol  finalists are movin’ on up, because this season they are residing in a rented four story, nine bedroom, twenty bathroom (I’m not kidding!) mansion that sits on over an acre of well-manicured land.  According to one real estate website, the home, which was originally built in 1927, boasts two pools (one indoor, one outdoor), a gym, a screening room, a bowling alley, an elevator, an indoor basketball court, a steam room, a jacuzzi, and private guest quarters.  It sounds like Disneyland!  I swear, put in a Starbucks and I’d never leave the place.  🙂  FOX has also sprung for a live-in chef, who cooks up healthy meals for the Idols  daily. You can see great indoor photos of the house on some real estate websites here and here.  And you can watch a video of the Idols moving into their new home here.

[ad]

img_1213-800

img_1214-800

Sadly, there’s not a whole lot of the home that is visible from the street, excluding some large exterior gates.  I could see about ten cars parked in the driveway, though, so it seems that the Idols were allowed to bring their cars with them to California.  🙂

img_1216-800

There are numerous differing online reports as to whether the Idol  mansion is currently for sale.  From what I can gather from the many conflicting accounts I’ve read, I believe the mansion was on the market for quite some time back in 2006 at a price of $43 million.  After over 200 days with no sale, that price was dropped to $29,995,000.  After an $18,500,000 deal fell through in 2008, the house was eventually taken off the market altogether.  It is currently available for lease at a rate of $85,000 per month.  The sign pictured above was on the ground in front of the mansion when I was stalking it.  I wonder if one of the Idol  hopefuls took it down in hopes that they would be able to buy the mansion themselves after landing a record deal.  LOL If you have the $85,000 a month to shell out to rent the place, it should be available in about ten weeks when Idol  is over.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

How I Became Prince of a Town Called Bel Air

Fresh Prince House? Got a challenge from Byron a couple of weeks ago to find the house from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. According to several Hollywood tour books, including my fave, the location on the left was the home used in the filming of the TV sitcom. However, after watching a few clips of Fresh Prince on YouTube, I am not convinced that it is truly the house. It doesn’t match up perfectly. There are a few reasons why this might be. It is quite possible that the owners of the home changed the exterior after the filming took place and it is also possible that the producers actually changed or added elements to the facade of the real house during filming which changed its appearance. It is also entirely possible that the tour books might have just gotten the location wrong – which does happen on occasion.

You can see clips of the Fresh Prince here and here and judge for yourself. But it looks like I have to do a bit more research on this stalking location. 🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: The supposed Fresh Prince house is located at 417 Amapola Lane in Bel Air. Amapola Lane is a very small street just off Copa De Oro Road. The house located at 363 Copa De Oro Road has been owned by several celebrities including Nicolas Cage, Tom Jones and Dean Martin. The Bel Air Hotel is not too far from this location. I highly recommend stalking the hotel – it is one of the most beautiful locations in Los Angeles.
