Virginia City Stalking!

I am currently visiting my Grandma in the Reno area and today she took me to historic Virginia City to do some sightseeing. Anytime I am in a new town, I always stop into the local visitor’s center or bookstore to ask if any movies have been filmed in the area. What’s that old saying? – Wherever you go, there you are. 🙂 Anyway, I stopped into the Mark Twain Bookstore to inquire about movie locations and the woman behind the counter told me that while Virginia City has not been used as a filming location, the movie The Misfits starring Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe was filmed in nearby Dayton in the 1960s. She also told us that during the filming, Marilyn stayed just up the street from the bookstore at Edith Palmer’s Country Inn. So, of course, I had to drag my grandma to go stalk it. 🙂

The Inn, which was originally a private home built in 1863, was owned by Ellis Morton, a wealthy businessman, and his wife Margaret. They lived in the home and operated the Cider Factory, which was located on the property. The Cider Factory supplied the nearby area with cider and vinegar. Edith Palmer purchased the home from the Mortons in 1948 and opened an inn. Edith was an award winning chef and apparently originally opened the Inn to put up her dinner guests who didn’t feel like driving home. In 2000, a couple named Pat and Leisa Findley purchased the home and completely restored it along with adding additional homes and guest rooms. They also opened a restaurant in the former Cider Factory space.

Today you can stay in the very room Marylin stayed in. “The Marilyn Room” is a second floor room complete with a bathroom with a tub and shower. You can see photos of the room on the Inn’s website. According to the hotel website, Marilyn is quoted as saying “To Edith Palmer and her oasis in the desert and warm hospitality – may I always be a welcome guest.” Besides Marilyn Monroe, other famous guest of the Inn include Robert Goulet and Liberace.

The Misfits was sadly the last film for both Marylin Monroe and Clark Gable. Clark suffered a heart attack the day after filming was completed and passed away 11 days later. According to IMDB, on the last day of filming he reportedly said “Christ, I’m glad this picture’s finished. She [Monroe] almost damn near gave me a heart attack.” Marilyn died a year after filming was completed on The Misfits and although she did work on the movie Something’s Gotta Give, she was fired due to her erratic behavior and filming was never completed.

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: Edith Palmer’s Country Inn is located at 416 South B Street in Virginia City, Nevada. Supposedly if you visit the Inn, the proprietor Leisa will take you on a tour and fill you in on the history of the Inn, but sadly she was not in when we visited. You can visit the Inn’s website here. The Mark Twain Bookstore is located at 111 South C Street, also in Virginia City.

New York Public Library

Finally saw Sex and the City: The Movie on Sunday! I literally could not sit still in my theatre seat until the movie began I was so excited!! I must say the movie was not as good as I hoped it would be. 🙁 There were parts I absolutely LOVED and times when I felt like I was visiting with my old friends Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha, and I for sure laughed and even cried. But overall I felt the movie missed its mark. It just lacked that SATC magic that was present in the TV show. Especially the ending. I think the Series Finale of the show which aired back in 2004 was a much more satisfying send off for my favorite foursome than the movie was. I need to curl up on my couch and watch the Finale on DVD again to make me feel better. 🙂

Anyway, in the movie Carrie and Big plan to get married (don’t worry I am not giving anything away here) at the New York Public Library, in the same building that “houses the world’s greatest love stories”. The New York Library is an absolutely beautiful building and I highly recommend a stalking visit there. The library was dedicated on May 23, 1911 and has been a popular New York tourist attraction ever since. The lobby of the Library is breathtaking with sweeping white marble staircases and vaulted ceilings. The second floor is covered in dark wood paneling with gorgeous paintings lining the walls and a huge mural covering the ceiling.

The New York Public Library was also featured prominently in the movie The Day After Tomorrow as the location where Jake Gyllenhal and his friends take refuge from the storm. It also showed up in the movies Spiderman, The Thomas Crown Affair, King Kong, and the Jen Aniston movie Picture Perfect, among many others. Update – my good friend Nat was highly dissapointed in me because I forgot to mention Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which filmed at the library! In the movie Holly Golightly and Paul run into the library, right past the Lions, and look up his book in the card catalog.

Out in front of the library are the famous marble Lions named Fortitude and Patience who have guarded the library entrance ever since its opening in 1911. Designed by Edward Clark Potter, the Lions are now the offical mascots for the NY Library and a book has even been written about them called Top Cats: The Life and Times of the New York Public Library Lions. I absolutely love the Lions and make it a point to visit them every time I am in New York.

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: The New York Public Library is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. If you are visiting New York in the Summertime, be sure to hit up Bryant Park right behind the Library. Bryant Park is absolutely beautiful in the Spring and Summer and they have a great restaurant called the Bryant Park Grill Outdoor Cafe.

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

One of my favorite places in all of Hollywood is the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, located right on Hollywood Boulevard. The Roosevelt has had a long and storied history in Hollywood and is even said to be haunted by a few of its former residents. Once you step inside the hotel’s beautiful Moorish lobby, you can almost feel the history coming right out of the walls. Built in 1927 and named after President Theodore Roosevelt, the hotel was the site of the very first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929. The Roosevelt has been a favorite getaway and hangout for celebrities ever since it’s opening. It’s guest list includes Lindsay Lohan, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Mary Pickford, Prince, Carole Lombard, Shirley Temple, and Elizabeth Taylor, just to name a few. Marilyn Monroe, whose very first modeling shoot took place by the hotel’s pool, lived in Suite 1200 for over two years, and the hotel is still said to be haunted by her ghost.

A mirror that used to hang in Marilyn’s room is now located in the mezzanine off the main lobby next to a very cool etched picture of the star. Montgomery Clift, who was a resident of Room 928 during the filming of From Here to Eternity, is also said to haunt the hotel. Legend has it that during his stay at the hotel, Montgomery paced the hallways outside of his room rehearsing his lines. His ghost is rumored to do the exact same thing and many hotel guests have reported seeing him walking the hallways reciting lines.

Rumor also has it that Bojangles taught Shirley Temple the “staircase dance” on the stairs leading up from the lobby to the Mezzanie level. The Roosevelt was completely restored a few years back, making it once again a favorite stomping ground of celebs. The pool is a favorite hangout of many stars, including Lauren Conrad who said in an episode of The Hills that she goes to the Roosevelt pool every Sunday.

The Roosevelt has been featured in several movies and TV shows, including Crossroads, Entourage, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Moonlighting, Catch Me If You Can, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Shade, and The Hills, among countless others.

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is located at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, almost directly across from Mann’s Chinese Theatre where the stars’ hand and footprints are immortilized in cement. If you get a chance, grab a burger in the hotel’s Twenty-Five Degrees restaurant- they are excellent!!

Tonight’s Without a Trace

My good friend, Lukas Behnken, is going to be on Without a Trace tonight, so tune in! Lukas is playing a character named Jeff Turner. Lukas is an amazing actor and has starred in episodes of Everwood, Grey’s Anatomy, Cold Case, and Seventh Heaven among others. He also starred in the Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movie The Challenge.

Stalk It: Without a Trace airs tonight at 10PM on CBS.

My Kind of Town

While in Palm Springs this weekend, besides stalking Mr. Barry Manilow, I also got to do some stalking of Frank Sinatra’s former desert retreat. I was given Frank’s address courtesy of my good friend EJ over at the Movieland Directory. According to EJ, not only did Marilyn Monroe have her very own special bedroom at Frank’s pad, but this is the same house where Old Blue Eyes once reportedly threw all of Ava Gardner’s belongings onto the driveway after she tried to catch him cheating on her with Lana Turner. That’s life! Franks’s house is a definite desert classic – it has that old 50’s style look to it and an old Palm Springs vibe. I would definitely recommend stalking this house – it’s gorgeous!!

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: Frankie’s place is located at 1148 East Alejo, just east of Palm Canyon Drive. After stalking Sinatra, head to nearby Downtown Palm Springs – there are some really cute shops along Palm Canyon Drive, including Bella Fashions (114 N. Palm Canyon) which sells fab shoes, Shoe-La-La (275 S. Palm Canyon) which has awesome clothes, and of course no shopping trip is complete without my fave – Starbucks (101 S. Palm Canyon)! 🙂

Il Sole – Jen’s Favorite Restaurant

dscn0329-1.jpg Those of you who are even half as obsessed with Ms. Aniston as I am, have most likely heard of her favorite restaurant, Il Sole. Jen is a regular at the tiny boutique Italian restaurant and has even sat down for a few magazine interviews there. But Jen is not the only one obsessing on the place – it seems everyone who’s anyone has been spotted there. Paparazzi have caught Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie, Brody Jenner, Lauren Conrad, Britney Spears, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and countless others at the little restaurant. TMZ even went so far as to call Il Sole the “new crack” in a recent article. I’ve never eaten at Il Sole myself – I am more of a chicken strips and ranch dressing kind of girl 🙂 – but I hear it is delicious!!

dscn0331.jpg My boyfriend and I were on our way to ONE Sunset, another celeb hot spot, on Friday night when we spotted Valerie Bertinelli dining with a balding mystery man at Il Sole. 🙂 ONE Sunset is the sister restaurant to New York celeb hang out ONE Manhattan and is a major celeb draw. It’s not very hard to see why – the place is incredible! I had never been there before Friday night, but let me tell you – I am for sure going back! ONE is absolutely gorgeous, with flowing silk curtains, huge vases filled with submersed pink flowers, and tabletops covered in candles. And the staff could not have been friendlier!! ONE has a very laid back vibe, even though it is located on the Sunset Strip, which is part of its charm. I absolutely loved it! Jennifer Aniston even hosted a party there last June to honor her good friend Laura Day’s new book release – so you know it has to be a cool place! 🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂 And enjoy the Hills mini-season premiere tonight! YAY!

Stalk It: Il Sole is located at the Sunset Plaza at 8730 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. ONE Sunset is located directly across the street from Il Sole, at 8751 Sunset Boulevard. You will often catch paparazzi hanging outside of Il Sole and ONE Sunset on Friday and Saturday nights waiting for the celebs to show up. Sunset Plaza is a definite celeb hot spot and you are virtually guaranteed a star sighting in its small two block radius.

Vacation Homes of the Stars

Since the early 1930’s, Palm Springs has been a favorite desert oasis for the Hollywood elite.  With its perfect winter and springtime weather, fabulous shopping, and beautiful desert ambiance, it’s not very hard to see why.  While visiting the desert this weekend, I dragged my boyfriend on my very own little stalking tour of Downtown Palm Springs.  Much to my boyfriend’s delight, the Palm Springs Visitors’ Center was kind enough to provide a free Map of the Stars’ Homes to act as our guide.  🙂

Sidney Sheldon’s HouseOur first stop was the home of Oscar winner, best-selling author, and Hollywood producer Sidney Sheldon.  Sheldon was a top television and movie producer back in the 1960’s, creating such hits as I Dream of Jeannie, The Patty Duke Show and The Bachelor and The Bobby-Soxer.  His home looks like it is straight out of the 60’s and is very reminiscent of the Brady Bunch home in Studio City.  Unfortunately, the house appears to be in serious disrepair and needs a little TLC.

img_2091.jpgThe next home we hit up was Kirk Douglas’ 1960’s style beauty just down the road from Sidney Sheldon’s house.  Before selling this house in 1999, Kirk spent many a weekend here with his wife.  My boyfriend absolutely fell in love with this house and all of its mid-century splendor.  The house definitely has a Palm Springs/Old Hollywood feel to it and has been perfectly maintained.  I am actually surprised the house hasn’t been used as a filming location, as it has a definite “Rat Pack” vibe to it.

img_2096.jpgDown the road from Kirk and Sidney, is the home Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn used to vacation at.  I was shocked at the normalcy of this house – especially the lack of a gate or foliage to hide the property from stalkers and prying eyes.  I am guessing they owned this home long before Kate Hudson became a household name and paparazzi favorite.

img_2098.jpgJust a few blocks away is Marilyn Monroe’s former desert home.  I absolutely love this house!  It looks as if it hasn’t been touched since Marilyn lived there in the 1950’s.  The home, like most on the Palm Springs movie star tour, is very stalker-friendly, with no gate or wall hiding it from view.

img_2101.jpgLast, but not least, we stalked two former Elvis Presley homes.  The first is the honeymoon home of Elvis and Priscilla – they lived here from May of 1967 to early 1968.  It was while living in this house that the two fell in love with Palm Springs and decided to purchase another home located in the Little Tuscany section of Palm Springs.  While I am not a huge fan of 1960’s architecture, I must admit that this house is definitely not short on charm.  It is just so “Elvis”!  🙂  I think it is extremely cool that the owners have chosen not to remodel or change the exterior of the home and have left it looking almost exactly as it did in Elvis’ day.

img_2105.jpgThe last home we stalked was the Little Tuscany abode Elvis and Priscilla purchased in the late 1960’s.  At the time of his death, this home, along with Graceland, were the only two properties owned by The King.  While Elvis’ honeymoon home is charmingly reminiscent of Old Palm Springs, this Little Tuscany house is absolutely hiddy and a total eyesore!  The perimeter of the home is actually surrounded by large rocks painted white, resembling snow.  It’s pretty atrocious!!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It:  The city of Palm Springs is located 110 miles east of Los Angeles.  You can stop by the Palm Springs Visitors’ Center, located at 2901 N. Palm Canyon Drive, for your very own free Map of the Stars’ Vacation Homes.  Via Lola Street is chock full of stars’ homes, including the former homes of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell at 550 Via Lola, Kirk Douglas at 515, and Sidney Sheldon at 425.  Marilyn Monroe’s former house is located just a few blocks away at 1326 Rose Avenue.  Nat King Cole lived for a time at number 1258.  1350 Ladera Circle is the home Elvis and Priscilla Presley lived in when they first got married.  845 Chino Canyon is the Little Tuscany home Elvis owned at the time of his death.

Someone Else Had Good Luck This Weekend! :)

While Oscar 2008 was almost a complete bust for me, I am happy to report that Hilarry from the blog “Think Pink” had a ton of luck stalking this weekend in LA – much better luck than I had!!! Many props to her! 🙂 You can read her Oscar post here.

Thanks, Hilarry, for the comment! 🙂 Glad you had so much fun! 🙂

Happy Stalking! 🙂
