  • The Former BaBalu Lounge – Where Michael Buble Got His Start

    P1000507

Another Michael Buble location that I found thanks to the book Michael Buble: The Biography, by Juliet Peel was BaBalu Lounge, the Downtown Vancouver nightclub where the cutie crooner performed regularly for two years before becoming famous.  And, let me tell you, once I heard about it, I became pretty hell-bent on the idea of grabbing a drink at the very spot where MB had honed his craft all those years ago.  As I quickly found out, though, the BaBalu Lounge is sadly no longer.  Apparently, the now-defunct club used to be located on the bottom floor of the Nelson-at-Granville Comfort Inn Hotel, but in 2001, a fire broke out on the top floor of the building and completely gutted the entire property, including Michael’s former singing spot.  The building was eventually purchased by a real estate development company who renovated the entire property and a new restaurant named Doolin’s Irish Pub subsequently opened in the former BaBalu space.  Such a bummer!  But even though BaBalu is no longer, I just had to stalk the hallowed ground where it once stood.

    ScreenShot4702

Especially since the club had played such an important role on Michael’s road to fame.  In 2001, the singer even named his second independently produced album “BaBalu” (pictured above) in honor of the lounge where he had sung every Sunday and Monday night for over two years beginning in 1997.  Of MB’s premiere album, titled “First Dance”, biographer Juliet Peel states, “It made no impact whatsoever on the world at the time, but this, and the other two independent albums Michael brought out before he hit the big time, are now collectors’ items.  Whole internet chains have been established trying to track them down (for a Buble fan, finding one of these records is equivalent to stumbling across a signed first edition of an early J.K. Rowling.)”   You’re telling me, Juliet!  What I wouldn’t give to own one of those albums!

    [ad]

    P1000508

Michael’s love of music was originally cultivated thanks to his beloved maternal grandfather, Mitch Santaga.  Mitch, who made his living as a plumber, not only first introduced Michael to the Standards, the songs that he would one day become famous for singing, but he also traded free plumbing services to local band-leaders in exchange for them allowing MB a chance to sing during their shows.  After he became famous, Michael, whom Mitch had long-before dubbed “Sunshine”, said, “Isn’t that hilarious?  He’d put in, like, a hot-water dispenser or something so that they would let me get up and sing.”  Love it!  In 1997, Michael landed his first regular paying gig at BaBalu Lounge, where he performed along with the Smokin’ Section band, for over two years.  He credits his years there as a major learning experience, saying of the patrons, “They came to meet a woman or get wasted, but I learned my craft.  It taught me how not to reek of desperation, how to step back and try to be charismatic and let them fall in love with me.”  And fall in love with him they did.  Michael quickly garnered a very loyal local fan base of mostly women :), who would come to watch him sing every single time he set foot onstage.  After two shorts years at BaBalu, MB moved to Toronto with then-girlfriend Debbie Timuss.  In a fortuitous twist of fate, shortly after that move, Michael performed at a corporate event where a man named Michael Sweeney was sitting in the audience.  After the show, Sweeney introduced himself to Michael, who in turn gave him one of his self-produced albums.  Sweeney passed along that CD to his close friend, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, who immediately hired the singer to perform at his daughter’s upcoming wedding.  One of the guests at that wedding turned out to be none other than music-producing legend David Foster, who is perhaps better known by his nickname – “the hit-maker”.  Foster was immediately taken with the with the Canadian crooner and had him move out to L.A. so that they could work together the very next week.  And, the rest, as they say, is history.

Unfortunately, because it was raining when we arrived at Doolin’s Irish Pub, I opted to stay in the car and take pictures through the window instead of getting out to stalk the inside of the place.  From what I’ve read, though, it seems like a very cool place to hang out.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

  • Michael Buble’s British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame Plaque on the Vancouver Starwalk

    Michael-Bubble-Walk-of-Fame-2

One of the other items on my must-stalk-while-in-Canada list was Michael Buble’s British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame plaque which is located on Canada’s version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame – the Granville Street Starwalk in Downtown Vancouver.  I guess you could say that my trip up to the Pacific Northwest was a full-on Michael Buble Stalking Vacation.  🙂  Ironically enough, when fellow stalker Kerry, her husband Jim, the Grim Cheaper, and I first crossed over into British Columbia this past Friday night, we were given a bit of a hard time by the border guards.  Actually, “hard time” is the wrong choice of words here.  Let’s just say that we were definitely questioned.  Upon finding out that I had never before visited the Pacific Province, our entire group was asked to get out of the car to answer some additional queries in the Border Services Agency’s main office.  It was at that point that I realized that there was no way in heck I could give a truthful answer to their question of why I was visiting Canada.  Can you imagine if I had stood there and said that I had traveled to their country for the sole purpose of stalking Michael Buble locations???  They probably would have had me arrested on the spot!  😉  But I digress.  Anyway, before my trip up north, I purchased Michael Buble: The Biography by Juliet Peel and, while I can’t say that the book was a particularly great read, it did alert me to some fabulous stalking sites, including Michael’s star on Vancouver’s Granville Street Starwalk.

The British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame was founded on July 4, 1994 in order to recognize those British Columbians who had made significant contributions in six different disciplines in the entertainment industry, including music, television, theatre, film, radio, and variety.  Over 180 different artists are currently honored with brass plaques embedded in the sidewalk along Canada’s so-called “Starwalk” – a two block section of Granville Street in Downtown Vancouver’s Theatre District.  About twenty new plaques, which are each the size and shape of a 12-inch phonograph record, are added each year.  Michael Buble, who originally hails from the Canadian city of Burnaby, was inducted into the BC Hall of Fame on April 19th, 2009, along with nine other honorees including theatre actress Wendy Gorling, radio personality Fanny Kiefer, and music producer Terry McBride.  Past inductees include jazz musician Diane Krall, “King of Swing” Dal Richards, and singers Sarah McLachlan and Bryan Adams.  Each Hall of Fame member also has a photograph of themselves on display in the Starwall area of the nearby Orpheum Theatre’s main lobby.  Unfortunately, though, I did not know about the Orpheum gallery until doing research for today’s post, so I was not able to stalk MB’s picture.  Such a bummer!  🙁

     Michael-Bubble-Walk-of-Fame-3 Michael-Bubble-Walk-of-Fame-4

Although the Hollywood Walk of Fame provides tourist maps which denote each particular star’s exact location, the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, sadly, does not.  And, oddly enough, I could not find much information about the place online before I left on my trip, so I had no idea where exactly on Granville Street Michael Buble’s plaque was located.  Since the Starwalk only stretches for two short blocks, though, I figured we could just walk the entire thing and track down his star once we got there, which is exactly what we set out to do.  But being that there were almost two hundred plaques to search, that got old rather quickly, so I popped into a Granville Street bookstore and asked the man at the counter if he could point me in the direction of Michael Buble’s star.  His answer – “I didn’t even know he had one.”  LOL  Thankfully, though, while I was in the bookstore, Kerry and my fiancé managed to find MB’s star and I have to say that I was rather giddy with excitement upon seeing it.  It was definitely worth the trouble it took to find it!  Note to the British Columbia Hall of Fame – you really ought to provide maps which pinpoint the exact location of each honoree’s plaque.  I mean, honestly, do I have to think of everything?  Sheesh!  😉

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: Michael Buble’s British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame plaque can be found just outside of the Mavi Jeans store, which is located at 850 Granville Street in Vancouver, Canada.  You can read more about the Starwalk on the official British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame website here.

  • Killarney Market from Michael Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet” Video

    P1000510

Now don’t laugh, but the primary reason behind the Grim Cheaper’s and my trip up to the Pacific Northwest this past weekend was so that I could stalk the spot where Michael Buble filmed the music video for his hit song “Haven’t Met You Yet” – Killarney Market in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Sure, we also wanted to sightsee, spend some time in Seattle and Canada, and visit with our good friends Kerry and Jim who live in the area, but, all kidding aside, the main purpose of our trip was to stalk that grocery store.  Yes, we traveled over 1,000 miles to see a supermarket!  You see, ever since I first watched the “Haven’t Met You Yet” video back in early October of last year, I promised myself that I would one day get up to Vancouver to see the Michael Buble grocery store in person.  That day came much sooner than expected, though, thanks to my fiancé’s boss, who recently presented us with Virgin America gift certificates as an early wedding present.  Well, let me tell you, my first thought upon seeing those certificates was, ‘We’re going to Canada, Baby!’  And, sure enough, we did!  Thanks to fellow stalker Kerry, who completely organized the trip and drove about four hours out of her way to pick us up at the airport, not only did I get to stalk the Michael Buble grocery store, but a slew of other Pacific Northwest locations, as well, which I will be blogging about over the next few weeks.   Anyway, upon landing at the Sea-Tac International Airport at around 5 p.m. this past Friday evening, Kerry, her husband Jim, the Grim Cheaper, and I headed north to Vancouver, British Columbia.  And bright and early the following morning we hit up Killarney Market to finally do some “Haven’t Met You Yet” stalking.  YAY!

    P1000511

I should explain here that there are quite a few reasons why I wanted to stalk Killarney Market so badly, the most obvious of which being that I absolutely LOVE Michael Buble.  More than that, though, I also absolutely ADORE the “Haven’t Met You Yet” video, which centers around Michael doing some shopping at a local grocery store.  While in the freezer section picking out some microwavable TV dinners, he spots his dream girl (who is played by MB’s real life fiancé Luisana Lopilato) standing just a few feet away from him.  He approaches her and the two sing and dance their way through the store, eventually winding up in the parking lot, marching band in tow.  The video ends with Michael standing in the check-out aisle, belting out his song, eyes closed, before realizing that the whole scenario had been imagined.  As he leaves the grocery store, slightly embarrassed, the girl he had envisioned in his daydream brushes past him.  MB stops for a moment to stare after her and then continues on his way.  “Haven’t Met You Yet” is an incredibly fun-spirited romp that makes one want to get out of their seat and dance, which is a big part of why I loved it so much.  But the fact that it was filmed in a grocery store made the video even more special to me, as my father managed supermarkets throughout my entire childhood.  To me, the video felt a little bit like home.  🙂

    [ad]
    ScreenShot4690
    P1000526
I am very happy to report that Killarney Market looks EXACTLY the same in person as it did onscreen in Michael’s video – minus the ticker tape and marching band, of course.  😉  I am also very happy to report that the Killarney employees could NOT have been nicer to us and literally almost fell over when they heard that we had traveled all the way from Southern California to see their store.  They were happy to answer all of my silly questions about the filming, which took place over the course of two nights in September of 2009, and they let me take all of the photographs of the place that I wanted.  YAY!  And while the employees that I spoke with weren’t exactly sure of how the grocery store premise of the video came to be, they did tell me that Killarney’s Market was specifically chosen as the “Haven’t Met You Yet” location because it reminded MB of a store he had shopped at as a child.  So cool!  (Note – my parents just gifted me with a new, hi-tech camera and I haven’t yet figured out exactly how to use it, so, sadly, my pictures of the market didn’t come out as well as they should have.)
    P1000550
One of the employees even showed me a picture on his blackberry that he had taken with Michael during the filming.  So, I, of course, had to snap a photograph of it.  🙂  I can’t tell you what I wouldn’t do to have my picture taken with MB like that!!!  Sigh!
    ScreenShot4680 ScreenShot4681
    P1000530 P1000543
    Another of the employees ended up taking us on a little mini-tour of the specific locations used in the video, which I thought was just about the coolest thing ever!!!!  🙂  The areas of the store which appeared in “Haven’t Met You Yet” include the freezer section (Aisle 6), which was both where Michael first spotted Luisana;

and the shelf where Michael sat throughout the video, which is located in the middle of Aisle 1.  Apparently, the managers of Killarney’s weren’t too excited about the prospect of MB sitting on one of their shelves during the filming as they were worried it might collapse, so producers ended up having the shelf reinforced and tying metal wires to the singer to guard against him falling.  I so love that Michael’s shelf was left a bit lower than the adjacent shelves, as it appeared in the video.

I cannot tell you what a thrill it was for me to finally be able to stalk the “Haven’t Met You Yet” grocery store!  It was definitely the highlight of my entire trip!  You can watch the video by clicking above and you can see some FABULOUS behind-the-scenes pictures of the filming of the video on the Killarney Market Facebook page here.

  • The New York Public Library from “Sex and the City: The Movie”

    20091006-BCK-001-DVD0005-4944-2

In honor of today’s big premiere of Sex and The City 2, I thought I’d blog about a location from the original movie that I stalked this past October while I was in Manhattan – the New York Public Library.  And even though I’ve actually blogged about this location once before, since I did not include any interior photographs, I thought the place was definitely worth re-visiting.  In the original Sex and the City movie, Carrie Bradshaw (aka Sarah Jessica Parker) and her fiancé Mr. Big (aka Chris Noth) plan to hold their upcoming nuptials at the library because, as Carrie says, it is “the classic New York landmark that housed all the great love stories”.  The New York Public Library was constructed during the years 1902 through 1911 on the site of the former Croton Reservoir and was designed by the architecture firm Carrere & Hastings.  The Beaux-Arts structure, which is made of white marble and cost $9 million to build, encompasses two full blocks of New York City land and contains 88 miles of shelving which holds over seven million books.  Amazingly enough, any one of those seven million tomes can be requested and delivered to the library’s main circulation desk within a period of ten minutes or less!  The New York Public Library, which was named a National Historic Monument in 1965, is a truly amazing piece of architecture and, being that it is symbolic of the two great loves of Carrie Bradshaw’s life – New York City and writing – it is easy to see why producers chose it as the site of her ill-fated wedding.

    ScreenShot4620 ScreenShot4625

    ScreenShot4623 ScreenShot4624

The library shows up twice in Sex and the City: The Movie. It first appears in the scene in which Carrie, while returning the book “Love Letters of Great Men, Volume I”, spots a wedding being set up in the library’s mezzanine.  She immediately decides the place is the perfect location for her own upcoming nuptials.

    New-York-Public-Library-5 New-York-Public-Library-4

    New-York-Public-Library-7 New-York-Public-Library-10

That first scene was shot in the extremely beautiful McGraw Rotunda, which is located on the library’s second floor.

    ScreenShot4627 ScreenShot4628

The New York Public Library next appears in the big wedding scene, during which Mr. Big stands Carrie up at the altar.  And I should state here that the wedding scene seriously annoyed me.  I mean, honestly, how many times can we expect Big to screw up before Carrie leaves him for good????  The SATC writers really need to come up with a new way of creating tension, because the whole Big-breaks-Carrie’s-heart thing was already getting old way back in Season 3.  We should be long past that storyline by now, but I digress.

    ScreenShot4626

According to the SUPER nice security guard I spoke with, producers had the McGraw Rotunda intricately decorated with thousands upon thousands of flowers and other adornments for the wedding scene, yet none of it was visible in the movie.  The only time any of the wedding decorations can be spotted is in the above-pictured blink-and-you’ll miss it scene in which Anthony Marentino (aka Mario Cantone) tells an assistant to keep all of the wedding guests off of the main stairwell.

    ScreenShot4631 ScreenShot4632

    New-York-Public-Library-12 New-York-Public-Library-11

The scene in which Mr. Big tells Carrie via telephone that he “couldn’t get out of the car” and that he will not be going through with the wedding was filmed in the library’s Astor Hall area, just off of the main lobby.

And, while I was stalking the library, I, of course, just had to reenact the scene in which a devastated Carrie drops her cell phone after finding out that Big has stood her up.

    ScreenShot4579 ScreenShot4580

    ScreenShot4581 ScreenShot4582

Sex and the City: The Movie was hardly the first production to film at the library, though.  The building was also the site of the benefit gala in the Season 3 episode of Gossip Girl titled “Ex-Husbands and Wives”

    ScreenShot4586ScreenShot4583

    ScreenShot4584ScreenShot4585

In the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Paul Varjak (aka George Peppard) and Holly Golightly (aka Audrey Hepburn) stop into the library during their “things we’ve never done before” day.  And while the real life exterior of the library appeared in that scene, I cannot say for certain that the actual interior was also used.  The interior scenes quite possibly may have been filmed on a studio soundstage.  The library also appeared in a later scene in the movie as the spot where Paul first tells Holly that he loves her.  And I just have to say here that I find it absolutely amazing that Audrey Hepburn’s costumes are still stylish today, almost five decades after Breakfast at Tiffany’s was filmed!  I mean, how adorable is the orange jacket pictured above?  But, again, I digress.

    ScreenShot4588ScreenShot4589

In the original Spider-Man movie, Uncle Ben (aka Cliff Robertson) drops off Peter Parker (aka Tobey Maguire) at the library, where he is supposedly going to do some studying.  Peter instead goes to a wrestling match dressed as Spider-Man.  When Ben later comes to pick Peter up, he gets killed outside of the library’s main entrance.

    ScreenShot4592 ScreenShot4591

Jenna Rink (aka Jennifer Garner) and Matt Flamhaff (aka Mark Ruffalo) stage part of their “Class of 2004” photo shoot in front of the New York Public Library in fave movie 13 Going On 30.

    ScreenShot4596 ScreenShot4595

    ScreenShot4597 ScreenShot4594

In 1997’s Picture Perfect, the library was the site of the Gulden’s Mustard party where Kate Mosley (aka my girl Jennifer Aniston) first becomes disillusioned with the advertising world.

    ScreenShot4598 ScreenShot4599

    ScreenShot4600 ScreenShot4601

And while a large portion of the movie The Day After Tomorrow was set in the New York Public Library, no filming actually took place there.  Instead producers built a replica of the library’s interior on a studio soundstage that they later destroyed during the massive flood scenes.  According to the security guard that I spoke with, set designers spent weeks taking measurements of the interior of the library so that it could be exactly replicated for the filming.

    ScreenShot4608 ScreenShot4610

    ScreenShot4603 ScreenShot4606

In The Thomas Crown Affair, the inside of the library stood in for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as the Met refused to let any interior scenes be shot on the premises.

    ScreenShot4611 ScreenShot4612

    ScreenShot4615 ScreenShot4616

The first Ghostbusters movie actually opens with a shot of the New York Public Library and its famous stone lions, who are named Patience and Fortitude.  The library has also appeared in the movies On The Town, Pickup on South Street, A Thousand Clowns, The Clock, King Kong, and You’re a Big Boy Now, and in the television series Kings.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

  • The Michael Jackson Auditorium at Gardner Street Elementary School

    Michael-Jackson-Auditorium-9

A few weeks ago, fellow stalker and mega-MJ-aficionado David from Spain told me about a King of Pop location that I wasn’t previously aware of – the Michael Jackson Auditorium at Gardner Street Elementary School.  So, of course, I just had to run right out and stalk it!  MJ attended the Hollywood area school for a few brief months in late 1969/early 1970, after the 11-year old singer and his four brothers first moved to Southern California from their hometown of Gary, Indiana to begin their new lives as performers.  At the time, the Jackson 5, who had recently been signed to the Motown record label, were on the cusp of superstardom.  Young Michael attended sixth grade classes at Gardner Street Elementary School during the day – you can view his class picture here – while the group recorded songs for their new label at night.  But, in January of 1970, after only a few short months at the school, the Jackson 5 skyrocketed to fame, their single “I Want You Back” hit number one, and Michael’s popularity made it so that he could no longer be a part of a normal school environment.  He withdrew from Gardner Street and from that point forward was homeschooled by a private tutor named Rose Fine.  But the story doesn’t end there.

    Michael-Jackson-Auditorium-3

    Michael-Jackson-Auditorium-4

In 1989, almost two full decades after he attended classes there, Gardner Street Elementary School decided to honor its most famous alumnae by renaming its assembly room the “Michael Jackson Auditorium”.  On October 11th, to the delight of the student body, the King of Pop himself showed up for the dedication ceremony, where he was presented with a plaque by his sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Laura Gerson.  The pop star made a brief speech thanking the students, the faculty, and the PTA, donated a large sum of money to the school, planted rose bushes on the campus, and even signed the wall of Room 8 – his former sixth grade classroom.   In the years following the dedication, Michael also personally paid the salary of the school’s music teacher out of his own pocket, an act which I find absolutely amazing!

You can watch a video of the Michael Jackson Auditorium dedication ceremony by clicking above.

    Michael-Jackson-Auditorium-2

    [ad]

    Michael-Jackson-Auditorium-1

But, once again, the story doesn’t end there.  Sadly, in November of 2003, following the singer’s arrest on molestation charges in the Gavin Arvizo case, Gardner Street School covered over the Michael Jackson portion of the auditorium’s sign with paint and a plywood box.  According to a November 25, 2003 Los Angeles Times article written by Erika Hayasaki, school district spokeswoman Stephanie Brady stated that administrators chose to cover the sign due to complaints from angry parents.  She said the sign “may” be uncovered following the trial, if the singer was found innocent.  But, even though, Michael Jackson was indeed acquitted of all charges on June 13, 2005, the sign remained covered, and still does to this day, seven years after the fact.  And while in America one is supposed to remain innocent until proven guilty, that certainly wasn’t the case here.  It’s pretty unbelievable to me that after BOTH his acquittal and subsequent death this past June, the plywood box has yet to come down.  You can see what the Michael Jackson Auditorium looked like before its sign was covered up here.

    Michael-Jackson-Auditorium-11

All that currently remains alerting anyone to the auditorium’s former name is a small plaque which reads “Michael Jackson Auditorium, Dedicated October 11, 1989”.  The plaque is barely visible, though, and we had to use my fiancé’s telephoto lens to snap a picture of it.  After telling me about this location, fellow stalker David said “I must admit, I am dying to stalk this place . . . but, at the same time, I am also dying to to go there and throw a bunch of eggs at their doors.”  And that pretty much sums up how I felt while I was there, too.  English may be his second language, but David sure has a way with words!  🙂

Big THANK YOU to David for telling me about this location!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

  • The Michael Buble Crazy Love Concert

    P1030229

As I have mentioned countless times before on this blog, this stalker is one hundred percent, head over heels in love with cutie crooner Michael Buble.  In fact, my fiancé and I are currently in the midst of creating our wedding slide show and the vast majority of songs I picked out to play during it are, of course, Michael Buble songs, which had my fiancé griping, “Lindsay, not EVERY song can be by him!  Let’s have some variety!”  Being that my dad and I are doing our Father/Daughter dance to “Save The Last Dance”, also by MB, I guess I am going to have to concede his point.  Otherwise our wedding might just turn into a Michael Buble dance party.  Which, now that I think about it, wouldn’t actually be such a bad thing.  But I digress.  So, when tickets for Michael’s Crazy Love Tour went on sale a few months back, I tried to purchase some for my parents, my fiancé, and myself.  Sadly, though, the show sold out within minutes and I was turned away empty-handed.  I did manage to find some on the ticket resale website StubHub a few weeks later, but seats were going for about $350 a piece.  I almost bought them, too, but the Grim Cheaper put his foot down and told me in no uncertain terms that “no way, no how” was I to buy those tickets.   Needless to say, I was crushed.  Then, a few weeks ago, I happened to mention my desire to see MB in concert in my blog post about the Michael Buble Suite at the Best Western Alderwood Hotel and, as fate would have it, fellow stalker David immediately emailed me and said he might be able to hook me up with tickets.  And, sure enough, he did!  I got a call from him at about 1 p.m. this past Friday afternoon saying that he had two very reasonably priced tickets for that evening’s show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles if I wanted them.  I was driving at the time and, let me tell you, I just about crashed into a tree I was so excited.  I immediately called up my fiancé to tell him the news, but I was so keyed up he couldn’t understand me.  He kept saying, “Lindsay, slow down!   Calm down! I don’t know what it is you’re trying to tell me!”  He told me later that at the time he actually thought I had been in an accident or something.  LOL   For the rest of the day, I could hardly sit still due to excitement as I knew that in just a few short hours I would be at the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles waiting for Michael Buble to take the stage!  YAY!

David had told me when he called that the seats he had secured were good ones.  And, while I knew that we would be sitting fairly close to the stage (we were in Row 17), I had NO IDEA how close we would actually be.  The above picture is my reaction when we entered the arena and saw our seats for the very first time.  I was literally DYING!

    P1030252

And while our tickets stated that we were sitting in “Row 17”, our seats were, in actuality, only six rows back from the side of the stage.  You can see in the above photograph how incredibly close we actually were.  The moment I first saw the stage and realized our close proximity to it was extremely bittersweet for me, as I had planned on bringing my dad to the show that night.   Unfortunately, though, he was not feeling well and was unable to accompany me, which absolutely broke my heart.  My dad is an even bigger MB fan than I am (if that’s possible!) and he would have ABSOLUTELY DIED to have attended one of his concerts sitting in the kind of seats that we had.  🙁  My dad not being there was truly my only regret of the night, though.  The rest of the evening was sheer perfection!

    P1030232

The night’s opening act was a group called Naturally 7, whom I was already familiar with from the song “Stardust”, which is featured on MB’s Crazy Love CD.  Naturally 7 is a group of 7 – duh! 🙂 – performers who specialize in what they call “Vocal Play”, a method of beat-boxing in which they use their voices, mouths, and bodies to impersonate instruments such as trombones, harmonicas, trumpets, and drums.  They were simply incredible and if I had closed my eyes throughout their performance I would have been convinced that there were actual instruments onstage.  Thanks to their jazzy-type sound, they were the absolute perfect opening act for a Michael Buble show.

    P1030292

    P1030263

At around 9 p.m., after Naturally 7 left the stage, the lights finally dimmed and the strains of “Cry Me A River” came blasting through the arena.  Michael first appeared as a shadow behind a white curtain, conducting his band, and then the curtain slowly parted and there he was!  Standing about 30 feet in front of me! Sigh!  I borrowed my dad’s camera for the concert, as his is a lot better than mine, but unfortunately, due to the incredibly bright lights on stage, most of my pictures did not come out.  Such a shame, too, as we really could have gotten some amazing shots of Michael.

    P1030289

    P1030268

After his big opener, MB addressed the crowd, something he actually does quite frequently throughout the show.  As New York Post writer Dan Aquilante wrote in his March 22nd review of Michael’s recent Madison Square Garden concert, “The one trick that can’t be borrowed or learned is genuineness.  There’s nothing phony about Buble.  When he speaks to the crowd, it’s as if you’re in his living room.”  Couldn’t have said it better myself!  Michael very early on established the fact that this would not be your typical concert, but that he instead wanted us to think of it like a party – a party with 14,000 guests, no less, but still a party.  He said that he would not be standing onstage simply singing songs while looking down at his shoes, but that we were “in it together”  and if we wanted to sing along, that we should absolutely sing along, that if we wanted to dance, we should get out of our seats and shake our caboose, and that if the people behind us didn’t like it, well, we should just . . . and then he stuck up his middle finger and waved it out at the crowd, Ed Rooney from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off-style.  LOL   I guess it goes without saying that the guy is absolutely HILARIOUS!  I had seen him in enough interviews to know that he was funny, but I had no idea how funny until this past Friday night.

    P1030269

    [ad]

    P1030306

Michael Buble is an absolute and total goofball and, as you can see in the above photographs, spends the vast majority of his time onstage laughing.  LOVE IT!  It is blindingly obvious how much he enjoys performing and that sheer kind of joy is nothing if not contagious.

    P1030314

He also spends a lot of time having actual conversations with people in the audience.  One lady asked him if he was married, as he appeared to be wearing a wedding ring, which you can see in the above picture.   He explained, though, that he had just recently gotten engaged to his Argentinean girlfriend, Luisana Loreley Lopilato de la Torre.  The woman who had asked the question cried out, “Oh, I’m Argentinean, too!”, to which Michael said, “Well, then you know!  It is customary in your culture for a man to also wear an engagement ring.”  The woman gave him a blank stare and then MB said, “OK, I guess not!  Well, she sure had me fooled!”  LOL  See what I mean – HILARIOUS!  Buble also does spot-on impersonations and can speak in hundreds of different accents, which he did throughout the night.    It very quickly became exceedingly obvious that Michael Buble is not a singer, but an all-out performer.

    P1030283

What amazed me most about the show, though, was the fact that, aside from one set of pyrotechnics that was released during the opening song, the entire night was completely devoid of spectacle.   There were no histrionics, no big dance ensembles, no videos playing in the background.  Michael was accompanied onstage solely by a microphone, a stool, and his band.  When you have a voice like his, everything else is just a distraction.

    P1030286

    P1030277

And, let me tell you, he had that audience on its feet the ENTIRE NIGHT LONG!  He’s truly an OUTSTANDING performer and he gives no less than 100% the entire one hour and forty minutes that he is onstage.  He runs around, dances his goofy Michael Buble-type dances, cracks jokes, and tells stories.  And he is absolutely enchanting!

    P1030320

    P1030287

Before we left for the concert, my dad told my fiancé that he would no doubt be a Buble-fanatic by the end of the night, to which I said, “Are you kidding me?  The Grim Cheaper is going to be sitting there the entire time thinking about the amount of money the tickets set him back.”  LOL  To my astonishment, though, the G.C. had a BLAST!  There were points in the evening when he was absolutely doubled over in laughter thanks to MB’s onstage antics and I even caught him tapping his foot along with the music a few times.  What’s even more telling is that at one point he ventured outside of the arena to use the restroom and I asked if he’d stop at one of the concert kiosks to buy me a T-shirt I had been eyeing.  When he returned from the restroom empty-handed, I asked about my T-shirt and he explained that, while waiting in line, he heard Michael start to sing “Home”, so he immediately rushed back inside as he didn’t want to miss it!  I guess my dad was right, after all – the Grim Cheaper has definitely become a Michael Buble fan.  🙂

My favorite part of the concert, though, had to be when MB talked about his childhood.  Buble told the audience that most fans incorrectly assume that Frank Sinatra was his childhood music idol, when in actuality he loved none other than the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson!  As you can imagine, I just about died upon hearing that!  He went on to say that growing up he spent quite a bit of time on his father’s boat – his father was a professional salmon fisherman – and every time MB got a break during the day, he would go down to the galley and watch a little movie called Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.    He said he absolutely LOVED the parade float scene and credits it with giving him his original desire to perform.  Sigh!  A Michael Jackson AND John Hughes fan?  Could this guy be any more perfect???  Then MB went on to perform an awesome “Billie Jean/Twist and Shout” medley, during which he even did the Moonwalk!, and, let me tell you, I just about died!  It was SO MUCH FUN!  You can watch a similar medley from Michael Buble’s Madison Square Garden concert by clicking above.

     P1030340

     P1030345

For the grand finale, Michael sang his latest hit song “Haven’t Met You Yet”, which is one of my favorites.  I couldn’t believe it when the confetti first started to pour down from the ceiling signaling the end of the show, though, as it had seemed to me that only about 25 minutes had passed since Michael first took to the stage.  In actuality, it had been almost ninety!  As they say, time FLIES when you’re having fun.  I literally could have sat there all night listening to him perform.  He was PHENOMENAL.  After the grand finale, MB came back out for an encore of three more numbers, including “Song For You” which he said he ends every single show with.  During the final stanza of the song he astonished the crowd by dropping his microphone to the floor and singing to us without using anything to amplify his voice.  Let me tell you, you could have heard a pin drop in that room, the crowd was so wowed.  His voice was so incredibly powerful, it was almost unbelievable.  It was an absolutely amazing end to an absolutely amazing evening – one I will never forget for the rest of my life.  I literally don’t think I breathed once during the entire show.  Even now, days later, my Michael Buble fog has yet to lift and my pulse rate is just beginning to return to normal.  🙂

    P1030249

A HUGE, TREMENDOUS, AND VERY HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO DAVID FOR HOOKING ME UP WITH THE CONCERT TICKETS!  WORDS CAN’T EXPRESS HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DID!  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

  • The Michael Buble Suite at the Best Western Alderwood Hotel

Best Western Alderwood - Michael Buble

As I’ve mentioned numerous times on this blog, my celebrity crush as of late is Canadian crooner Michael Buble.  I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the guy and his music!  So, when my good friend and fellow stalker Kerry went on a business trip to the Seattle area a few months back and noticed that her hotel, the Best Western Alderwood, had a “Buble Suite” she immediately called me up to let me know.  And, as you can probably imagine, I practically had a heart attack right there on the spot.  It was at that point that I vowed to someday travel to the City of Lynnwood in the southwestern portion of Washington State to not only stalk the Best Western Alderwood, but to also spend a night in the actual “Buble Suite”.  Especially since Michael filmed his “Haven’t Met You Yet” video at the Killarney Market in Vancouver, Canada which is just a short two hour drive from the hotel.  (See the kind of stuff my fiancé has to deal with?  It’s amazing I was ever proposed to!  When I first told him of my intended Seattle travel plans, I believe his exact words were, “You want me to drive you two hours to see a grocery store?”  Needless to say, I doubt we’ll be making the trip to Lynnwood anytime soon.)   Anyway, Kerry didn’t take any photographs of the hotel for me on that particular trip, so I begged her to stop by there on her next visit to the Seattle area, which she did last month.  Thank you, Kerry!  And while I don’t typically blog about locations that I haven’t personally visited myself, this one was just too good to pass up.  🙂

    [ad]

    ScreenShot3980

The Best Western Alderwood is not your typical five-star, celebrity-laden lodging, but from from what Kerry was able to gather from the super nice people she spoke with, Michael Buble, who hails from nearby Vancouver, is apparently a longtime family friend of the hotel’s General Manager.  Sometime in the past couple of years, the singer stayed on the property – in Room Number 107, to be exact – and afterwards the General Manager named the suite in his honor.  Which is something I really think all hotels should do!  I mean, how GREAT would it be to know the exact room numbers where certain celebrities have stayed at different hotels all across the world?  You can bet I’d be booking the Jennifer Aniston Suite at every hotel I stayed at if that was the case!  😉 I actually think it was pretty common practice back in the day to name hotel rooms after the famous guests who had stayed there and I, for one, think that practice needs to be brought back!  Stat!  So, kudos to you Best Western Alderwood!  May all hotels follow suit!  Kerry also found out that some of Michael’s family members frequently stay at the BW Alderwood, as well, so if you happen to check in there and spot an MB lookalike, chances are it might be his relation!  🙂

    ScreenShot3982

    ScreenShot3981

But not only did the hotel name a room after the cutie crooner, they also adorned the wall behind the front desk with his photographs, autographs, and other MB memorabilia.  SO LOVE IT!  You don’t even understand how BADLY I want to see all of this with my own two eyes!   I was practically salivating while looking at Kerry’s photographs!  Hopefully I’ll get there someday!

On a Michael Buble side note – For those who missed his “Hamm and Buble” skit on Saturday Night Live back in January, you so need to check it out – and can do so by clicking above!  It’s absolutely HILARIOUS!  I swear I’ve seen it about twenty times now and literally never get tired of it.  Love it!

Big THANK YOU to Kerry for finding this location and stalking it for me, twice!  😉

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: The Best Western Alderwood is located at 19332 36th Avenue W in Lynnwood, Washington.  The Buble Suite is Room Number 107.  You can visit the hotel’s official website here.  His “Haven’t Met You Yet” video was filmed at the Killarney Market which is located at 2611 East 49th Avenue in Vancouver, Canada.

  • The Probable “Beat It” Diner, Part II

    P1030182

[UPDATE – The Monte Carlo Restaurant is NOT where “Beat It” was filmed.  The iconic video was actually shot at the Special Café, located just a few blocks away.  You can read all about it here.  Even though this post contains erroneous information, I am leaving it up as it chronicles an important part of the long, arduous journey my fellow stalkers and I embarked upon to track the locale down.]

This past Friday, after yet another doctor appointment in Downtown L.A., my dad and I stopped by the Monte Carlo Restaurant, aka the (probable) diner which appeared in Michael Jackson’s 1983 music video for his hit song “Beat It”.  Our mission that day – and yes, we chose to accept it 😉 – was two-fold.  First, I wanted to take more interior photographs of the place in the hopes that I would be able to find some small element which matched what appeared in the video so that I could finally confirm or deny once and for all whether or not “Beat It” had actually been filmed there.  Second, I wanted to take a closer look at the restaurant’s “Open/Closed” sign to see if it was, in fact, the same exact one which was featured in the video, as fellow stalker John had speculated in a comment in my last post on the Monte Carlo.  If it was, my plan was to ask the owner if we could swap it out with a new sign that my dad had purchased so that I could take the “Beat It” sign home as a souvenir.  Upon closer inspection, though, the sign which is currently displayed in the window of the Monte Carlo Restaurant is brand, spanking new and is in far too good of shape and is far too clean to possibly be the same sign which hung there 27 years ago.  But . . .

    IMG_6338

. . . as luck would have it, while we were dining my dad did happen to spot a loose linoleum floor tile that someone had propped up against the wall near where we were sitting, so he snagged it on our way out the door.  I’m really not kidding – he actually walked out of the restaurant with a floor tile in his hand!!!!  LOL  And while I’m still not even sure if “Beat It” was actually filmed at the Monte Carlo or, if it was, if that particular floor tile was in place at the time, it’s still a pretty cool relic to have.  But, while I did walk away with a nifty souvenir, sadly the first part of our mission was not achieved as we didn’t get any sort of confirmation about “Beat It” being filmed on the premises.  In fact, if it’s possible, I am even MORE confused now than I was before!  This was actually a particularly frustrating stalk for me.  The woman who owns the Monte Carlo is Chinese and speaks very little English and I can’t tell you how difficult it is to know that she has all of the answers I am seeking, yet not be able to fully communicate with her.  I am dying to bring someone into the restaurant who speaks Chinese fluently who could translate our conversation as I think it would finally put an end to all of our doubts and questions about the “Monte Carlo” being the “Beat It” cafe.  Any volunteers???  Anyway, to aid in my conversation with the owner, I showed her some screen captures from “Beat It” that I had stored on my cell phone.  Well, let me tell you, she just about had a heart attack right then and there!  She was practically screaming over the pictures and kept saying “My restaurant!  My restaurant!  Oh my God, my restaurant!”  She immediately grabbed my phone and proceeded to show the pictures on it to all of the people who were working the breakfast shift and all of the patrons who were dining at the time.  She then came back over to me and, from what I could best understand, said that she had been made to leave the restaurant during the filming of “Beat It”, so she never got to meet or even see Michael.  She also explained that she had never actually watched the video before – which I found very odd.  If the biggest superstar in the world filmed a video in your cafe, wouldn’t you not only have seen said video, but also bought a copy of it?  So, while it was extremely cute to see her get so excited over the pictures of Michael standing in her restaurant, it really gives me pause that she had never seen “Beat It’” before.  Because of the communication barrier, though, I wasn’t able to ask her why that was.  Like I said before, I really need to get a translator in there!

    Beat It Pipe 2

    Beat It Pipe

I did spot a few landmarks of sorts while my dad and I were at the Monte Carlo that match up with what appeared in the video – one of which was the conduit pipe which runs horizontally along the restaurant’s south wall.  I am ashamed to admit that I actually never noticed the pipe in the video until fellow stalker David from Spain pointed it out to me a couple of weeks ago when I posted my first write-up on the “Beat It” cafe.  So, this past Friday while stalking the restaurant I made sure to look to see if that pipe was there in real life, too, which it was!  YAY!  That’s a pretty big confirmation, at least in my eyes, that the Monte Carlo is, in fact, the same place that appeared in “Beat It”.

    ScreenShot3968

    P1030200

As you can see in the above photograph and screen capture, the lower portion of the wall next to the restaurant’s entrance also matches the lower portion of the wall that appeared in the video.  It is apparent that the area of the wall closest to the floor was once painted a lighter shade of green, as was the case in “Beat It”.  The flooring also appears to be worn in pretty much the exact same spots as it was in the video.  But, again, I would expect that sort of wear and tear in an old restaurant.

My dad took some photographs from close to the same angle from which “Beat It” was filmed so that I could try to match up certain aspects of the Monte Carlo to the “Beat It” cafe, but I am still unable to say whether or not it’s the same place.   I’d love to hear the opinions of my fellow stalkers, though.  🙂

    ScreenShot3962

    IMG_6115

In a very ironic twist of fate, fellow stalker David from Spain was recently watching videos at a party and almost fell off his chair when he noticed a familiar site in the 2004 Hoobastank video for the song “The Reason”.   That familiar site just so happened to be the Monte Carlo!  Yes, “The Reason” was filmed on location outside of the probable “Beat It” diner!!!!   Honestly, what are the odds of that?  What amazed me most about the whole thing, though, was how much of the restaurant has changed in the six short years since the video was filmed.  As you can see in the above screen capture and photograph, the exterior is almost unrecognizable.  In fact, if the “Monte Carlo” name hadn’t been displayed outside, I wouldn’t have believed it was the same place!  Apparently, at the time “The Reason” was filmed the restaurant had a green metal roof, a green metal overhang/awing, and completely different exterior signage, all of which is now gone, which got me to thinking – if that much has changed in six short years, imagine the myriad of changes that have occurred in the twenty-seven years since “Beat It” was filmed.  I mean, it’s no wonder the cafe looks so different today than it did in the video.

    ScreenShot3964

On a Michael Jackson side note – I recently became obsessed with tracking down and purchasing the SUPER CUTE rhinestone-encrusted MJ T-shirt that comedian Jo Koy wore last week on the Chelsea Lately show (pictured above).  Thankfully, after the episode aired Jo twittered about where one could purchase said shirt and I immediately did.  🙂  The tee was created by a company named Broke2 and costs $40.  Not a bad deal, at all!  I had a feeling that some fellow MJ-obsessed stalkers might also be interested in the shirt.  If so, you can pick one up here.  They come in both women’s and men’s styles.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: The probable “Beat It” diner, aka the Monte Carlo Restaurant, is located at 109 East Fifth Street in Downtown Los Angeles.  Please remember that the cafe is not located in the safest of areas, so exercise caution when stalking it.

  • The (Probable) Warehouse from Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” Video

    Beat It address number

Another day, another “Beat It” locale!  After tracking down the probable diner that appeared in “Beat It”, I set my sights on locating the warehouse which was also featured in Michael Jackson’s iconic 1983 music video.  And I really have to say a big thank you to my friend and fellow stalker David in Spain before I go any further with this post because had he not informed me that the “Beat It” diner was located somewhere on Fifth Street in Downtown Los Angeles’ skid row area, I doubt any of us would have ever been able to track down the other locales featured in the short film.  Finding these locations has been like a veritable domino effect, one locale leading to the next and to the next and to the next, all thanks to that original clue that David emailed me a few weeks back.  So, thank you, David!  Anyway, two weeks ago I was at my parents house watching my dad’s Michael Jackson’s Number Ones  DVD trying to figure out where the “Beat It” warehouse was located, when my dad spotted an address number of 1013 (pictured above) painted on the building’s exterior wall. I immediately sent that information out to Mike, from MovieShotsLA, David in Spain, and another fellow stalker named David who lives right here in the U.S. (the very same David who tracked down the Martini house from It’s A Wonderful Life which I blogged about back in December).  Well, it wasn’t an hour later that David from America (is this getting confusing yet? ;)) emailed me back with the warehouse’s location – 1013 Fifth Street – which is the very same street  where the “Beat It” diner and former pool hall/now grocery store can be found!  So, I immediately dragged my dad right out to stalk the place.  THANK YOU, DAVID!

    IMG_6226

    [ad]

    IMG_6227

As the word “probable” in the title of this post implies and as was the case with the diner, I can’t say with absolute, one hundred percent certainty that the warehouse David found is the actual “Beat It” warehouse.  There are quite a few irrefutable similarities between the building that appeared in the video and the one pictured above, but because almost three decades have passed since filming took place, there are also, of course, some major differences.  My gut is telling me that it’s the right spot, and they do say that you should always trust a woman’s intuition, but I just can’t be sure.  So, once again, dear readers, I am putting it out there for to you to answer.   Let me know what you think after reading this post.  Did David find the correct place or should we continue our search?  And now, on with the blog!  The “Beat It” warehouse is currently occupied by a food distributer known as Jing San Food, Incorporated and all I have to say is THANK GOD my dad was with me on this particular stalk because he somehow managed to not only talk our way into the building, but to also get permission to take photographs of the place!  Simply AMAZING!  Anyway, according to the people I talked to, Jing San Food moved into the warehouse space two years ago and, unfortunately, no one seemed to know what sort of business occupied the premises before that time.  Nor did anyone seem to know anything about “Beat It” being filmed there – if, in fact, it was.  Anyway, as you can see in the above photographs, the address number of Jing San Food is actually 458 and not 1013 as we had seen in the video.

    ScreenShot3930

But, if you look at the above Google Maps Aerial View of the warehouse you can see that it is located on the corner of Alameda and Fifth Streets.  The 458 address number refers to its location on Alameda.  As is also referenced in the above map, though, the south side of warehouse is situated on the 1000 block of Fifth Street, on the odd-numbered side of the street, which means that it is very possible that way back in 1983, the year “Beat It” was filmed, the warehouse could have been numbered 1013.  I am guessing that the building was divided up and leased to more than one tenant at that time, which would have required there to be more than one address number.  Because the building is only occupied  by one tenant today, those multiple address numbers would be redundant and unnecessary.  I am guessing that they did away with the Fifth Street numbers and just kept the Alameda Street address once the new tenants moved in.  But, again, that is entirely a guess on my part.

    beat it warehouse 1

Amazingly enough, though, I did spot a “0” posted on the Fifth Street side of the warehouse – which seems to be a left over address number from quite some time ago and absolutely cements my belief that that particular part of the building was numbered 1013 at one time.  So, that’s one thing we’ve got going in our favor.

    ScreenShot3948

    IMG_6267

       IMG_6269

The next, and quite possibly biggest, thing we’ve got going for us is the cement staircase which leads up to the warehouse.  As you can see it is a pretty exact match to the one which appeared in “Beat It”.  The warehouse doors have changed and there is now a makeshift doorway in one of the bays (which you can see more pictures of later on in this post) . . .

    IMG_6270

    IMG_6271

      IMG_6274

. . . but otherwise this part of the exterior looks pretty darn similar to the “Beat It” warehouse exterior.

     Beat It background 1

    Beat It background 2

The windows which appear across the street from the warehouse are also pretty darn spot on to the windows which appear across the street in “Beat It”.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t match up the exact angle that appeared in the video as there were by no stretch of the imagination at least fifteen big rig trucks parked out on the street in front of the warehouse blocking my view.

    Beat It awning

    Beat It awning 2

Yet another thing we’ve got going in our favor is the fact that the warehouse in the “Beat It” video has an awning of some sort on its exterior and the warehouse David found also has remnants of what looks to be a former awning.

    ScreenShot3940

    IMG_6228

The inside of the warehouse, however, is an entirely different story.  As you can see in the above photograph and screen capture, the ceiling of the building does not look at all like the ceiling from “Beat It”.  I confirmed with one of the Jing San Food workers that the entire ceiling of the warehouse had been replaced – not redone, but actually replaced – two years ago, before they took over the space, so it would make sense that it wouldn’t match.  But I have no way to confirm what the old ceiling looked like and it seems odd to me that someone would actually change the entire shape of the roof from peaked to flat.  I mean, it’s possible that that happened, but I can’t say that it’s very likely.

    ScreenShot3938

    IMG_6243

As promised, pictured above is the interior view of the makeshift door that now stands in the “Beat It” bay.  As you can see, the door, which did not appear in the video, was quite obviously an add-on to the property and not an original part of the warehouse.  It also, sadly, alters the appearance of the interior quite a bit.

    ScreenShot3944

    ScreenShot3946

    IMG_6232

While stalking the warehouse, my dad and I tried to locate something that would tie the place to the “Beat It” video – any small remnant that would irrefutably prove that we were in the right place.  Sadly, no such remnant was to be found.  In the video, it appears that there is some sort of makeshift office space located behind Michael and the gang members.   That office space is no longer there, though.  My dad said that warehouses typically have some type of coarse office set-up like the one which appeared in “Beat It” and that because it is usually constructed in a rudimentary manner, it would not be at all uncommon for a new tenant to dispose of it.

    Beat It stairs

Part of that rudimentary office space consisted of a second floor area (you can see the stairway leading up to it in the above screen capture).

    IMG_6258

    IMG_6260

At first blush I wouldn’t think that the warehouse I visited would have been tall enough to house a second floor, but as you can see in the above photographs, the tenants are currently having one installed!  So, it actually is possible and is, in fact, being done!

    ScreenShot3942

    IMG_6250

The chipped up cement floor of the warehouse is also very similar to the one which appeared in “Beat It”, but then again I would expect the floor of any heavily trafficked warehouse to have that same worn-in appearance.

     IMG_6262

    IMG_6261

So, like I said earlier, I am putting it to you to decide, dear readers.  Have we found the warehouse?  If David was right and this is in fact the actual “Beat It” warehouse, it is absolutely mind-boggling to me that I was in the exact spot where the King of Pop made music history almost three decades prior.  That warehouse floor is definitely hallowed ground and I can’t even believe I was able to stand on it!

     ScreenShot3931

    ScreenShot3932

David was also able to track down the probable manhole cover that the gang members came out of at the beginning of “Beat It”.  And I just have to say here that that particular part of the video never really made sense to me.  What, do these guys live underground?  Just hang out there?   LOL  Even as a child I can remember wondering why people would be coming up out of the ground like that.  But I digress.

We believe the manhole cover is located just east of the warehouse in the middle of the intersection of East Fifth and Seaton Streets.  This particular location will be the toughest of them all to prove, though, because . . . well . . it’s a manhole cover.  Such covers are located all over the city, pretty much all look exactly the same, and, unfortunately, aside from a nearby set of train tracks, there aren’t really any landmarks seen in the “Beat It’” video with which to distinguish it.  But, due to its close proximity to the warehouse and a set of train tracks. I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that the manhole cover pictured above is the one which appeared in “Beat It”.

Big THANK YOU to David (from America) for finding this location and to David (from Spain) for setting off the entire “Beat It” chain of events!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: The probable “Beat It” warehouse, aka the Jing San Food, Inc. warehouse, is located at 458 South Alameda Street, at the corner of Alameda and East Fifth Streets, in Downtown Los Angeles.  The probable manhole cover is located at the intersection of East Fifth and Seaton Streets, just due east of the warehouse.

  • The Alley from Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” Music Video

    IMG_6311

Last week, Mike, from MovieShotsLA, stumbled upon an article about Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” music video written by a journalist named Sylvie Simmons who was actually on the set with the pop star during the legendary filming.  The article, which was published in a 1983 issue of “Creem Magazine”, begins with the following sentences, “Downtown between the Pacific American Fish Co. and the Hotel St. Agnes Hospitality Kitchen there’s an alley. Cars block each end, no escape. And, silhouetted in the car headlights, two rival LA gangs are swaggering towards each other.”  She was, of course, speaking about the scene in the beginning of the “Beat It” video in which two groups of opposing gang members are shown walking down a dark alley.  Well, once Mike and I read Sylvie’s words, we immediately started Googling the terms “Hotel St. Agnes Hospitality Kitchen” and “Pacific American Fish Company” to see if we might be able to track down the historic alley that supposedly ran between them.  I was actually thinking that this particular find would be an easy one – a slam dunk, if you will – but alas that was not the case at all.  Unfortunately, because 27 years have passed since the iconic video was filmed on the streets of Downtown Los Angeles, we both came up completely empty handed.  As far as we could tell, both the Hotel St. Agnes Hospitality Kitchen and the Pacific American Fish Company had long since either moved to new locales or been shut down entirely.  But, thankfully, Mike had a pretty big ace up his sleeve, so our “Beat It” alley search didn’t end there.

As they say in battles, “When all else fails, call for reinforcements!”, which is exactly what Mike did.  As luck would have it, Mike happens to know an LAPD officer named Rudy who has worked in the skid row area of Downtown Los Angeles for years.  So, Mike immediately called up Rudy and asked if he might be able to track down the fish market’s former location.  And, sure enough, he did!  The former Pacific American Fish Company headquarters (pictured above) is located at 620 South Gladys Avenue, just a few short blocks from where both the “Beat It” diner and pool hall scenes were filmed.  Unfortunately, though, neither of us could find any sort of alleyway or hotel near the former fish company building.  It was then that I decided to expand my search.

Using Google Street View I wandered a block north of the former Pacific American Fish Company and stumbled upon a building with a sign posted above its entrance which read “Hotel Saint Agnes”.  Eureka!  I was extremely surprised to discover, though, that the fish company and the hotel were separated not only by several hundred feet, but by a large street, as well.  I had taken Simmons’ words to mean that the two buildings were located directly next door to each other and that the alley could be found right in the middle of them.  In reality, though, she was describing an alley located at a point somewhere in between two places that I am guessing at the time were area landmarks.  So, I immediately started looking at all of the alleys that are situated in the space between the Hotel St. Agnes and the former fish market and fairly quickly came across one which looked like it could be the “Beat It” locale.  And, sure enough, it was!  YAY!  So, yesterday, on the way home from taking my dad to a doctor appointment, the two of us stopped in Downtown Los Angeles to finally do a little stalking of the famous “Beat It” alley!

The “Beat It” alley actually shows up just once in the video and only for a very brief second, but to me the location is still iconic.  And, amazingly enough, as you can see in the above screen captures and photographs, it still looks almost EXACTLY the same today as it did 27 years ago when “Beat It” was filmed!

There are, of course, some differences, such as the fact that, for whatever reason, the Saint Agnes Hotel has since added rows of windows along its side.

But the shape and position of the buildings and telephone poles in the background of the video as compared to real life are an almost perfect match.  Whoo-hoo!  The distance from the street to the buildings that border the alleyway is a bit off, as you can see in the above pictures, but I have noticed that movie cameras have a tendency to distort proximities, for whatever reason.  Objects in camera are not as close as they appear.  😉

What struck me the most about the alley, though, was the fact that the big grey pipe shown running down the side of the Hotel Saint Agnes in “Beat It’” is STILL there to this day, over two and a half decades later!   SO DARN COOL!

The other alleyway, that the rival gang is shown walking down in “Beat It”, is, I believe, located directly across the street from the first one on the west side of South Gladys Avenue.  Unfortunately, though, because the images from that scene are so darn dark, I can’t really say for certain that it’s the right spot.  Oh, Michael, why couldn’t you have filmed “Beat It” during the day?  I realize it wouldn’t have given you the same sort of dangerous effect as filming at night did, but it sure would have made things easier on us stalkers!  😉

And, of course, I just had to do the little “Beat It” gang member finger snap while I was there.  I so wanted to look tough in the above picture, but that’s a little hard to do when you’re wearing capri sweatpants and carrying a Louis Vuitton purse.  😉  I am happy to report, though, that while the alley is not in an entirely fabulous area, it’s not nearly bad as where the former pool hall/now grocery store is located.  I mean, as you can see, I did get out of the car for this stalk!  I wouldn’t, however, recommend visiting this location alone, as it is in a pretty desolate part of town.  As always, please exercise caution.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: The “Beat It” alley is located on the South 500 block of Gladys Avenue, next to the St. Agnes Hotel which is located at 560 South Gladys Avenue, in Downtown Los Angeles.
