In February, I received a challenge from a fellow stalker named Jill who wanted to know about the home belonging to Melissa Burke (Melissa Joan Hart) on the ABC Family sitcom Melissa & Joey. The residence looked familiar to her and she was fairly certain that it had been used previously in another series. She was not alone in that belief. One quick Google search of “Melissa & Joey house, same as” led me to several message boards in which commenters queried about where they had seen the property before. I had never actually watched an episode of Melissa & Joey, but was immediately intrigued, so I streamed the show on Netflix. The Burke residence did not look at all familiar, though. Thus began the mystery of the Melissa & Joey house. And y’all know how much I love myself a good mystery! Fellow stalker Geoff, of the 90210Locations website, did manage to track the dwelling down shortly after Jill posted her challenge and while I ran right out to stalk it, I have yet to figure out why the place looks so familiar to so many viewers.

Several of the message boards I came across featured commenters asking if the Melissa & Joey house was the same property used in Reba, Step by Step or Boy Meets World. As you can see in the collage pictured below, though, the Melissa & Joey residence bears virtually no resemblance to the Reba or Boy Meets World house. And while it does look similar to the Step by Step house, they are clearly not one and the same.
To me, the Melissa & Joey house is reminiscent of both the Mama’s Family and Old School homes, but, again, is obviously not either one.
So I will put it out there to my fellow stalkers. Do any of you recognize the home from another production?
Melissa & Joey is set in Toledo, Ohio, but the Burke residence can actually be found in Hancock Park. Of the property, series’ executive producer Boy Young said, “Her house is a house here in Los Angeles that we selected because it’s architecturally believable from Toledo. Our production designer basically surveyed architectural styles of Toledo and tried to find something here in L.A. that resembled that.”
In real life, the picturesque, two-story dwelling, which was originally built in 1914, features four bedrooms, three baths, 3,005 square feet of interior space, and a 0.22-acre plot of land. It last sold in April 2008 for $1.795 million.
Several message board commenters also stated their beliefs that the interior set – which exists inside of a soundstage at CBS Studio Center in Studio City – was recycled from another series, as well, although it does not look at all familiar to me. So I will once again put it out there to my fellow stalkers – does anyone recognize the interior of the Melissa & Joey house from another production?

Just caught an Ad for this show on TV, did a bit of Googling and found your page. The interior set from the show is the exact interior set they used for the TV show Joey (the Friends spin off). Kitchen counter, rear door, front couch/entrance/stairs are all the same.
I´m thinking so hard, my head it actually hurting! I do not recognize the house at all… I thought the inside looked a bit with what I remembered to be the house from “living with fran”, but it´s not.
I have a blog, in portuguese, in which I lead people to stores and give them tips to make their houses look like the houses we see in movies. I´ve published the adress from the You´ve got mail movie set, in NY, I got from you. I gave you credit, is that ok? My “public” is not the kind of people who would travel thousands of miles to visit a movie location, anyway… so I figured it wouldn´t hurt! I can remove it if you want me to!

The house is from another ABC family series Lincoln Heights!!!
I just scanned through a couple of episodes. Are you talking about the main family’s house in the series? If so, it’s not the same one. 🙁
It looks like the house from the show with the Olsen twins,their dad,n Carrie their nanny moved in2 the basement!
It’s not that one either. That was a brownstone on the Warner Bros. backlot.

It looks a lot like the house they used for the opening credits of a house on a long ago sitcom starring Lucille Ball’s daughter I think. I can’t remember the show though.
I scanned through the opening credits of all the series she was on (except for “Sons and Daughters” which I couldn’t find) and none showed a house.
House from Charmed perhaps?
No – that one is on Carroll Avenue.
The interior of the Melissa and Joey house no longer looks the same as the above pictures. The newer episodes show a change in first floor as well as an addition going up to the right side of the stairs in the kitchen. Melissa had her house remodeled last season.
The interior design is constantly changing. There are randomly added (then missing) rooms, the direction of the stairs moved, cabinets and countertops differ in color and style, and the colors to the walls and furniture are always different. Makes watching the show even more fun!

I find your blog while looking for the location of the Good Luck Charlie house (thank you SO much by the way! I’ve adjusted loved that house so much! I’m going to visit it next time I go to the Huntington Library). Anyway, I don’t watch this show, but the inside set looks a lot like the Reba set.

Based on that picture, the living room interior looks a lot like According to Jim, although having only watched a handful of episodes I have no idea if that’s actually the case (and I’ve never watched Melissa and Joey so I have no idea what it looks like from other angles). As far as the exterior goes, I think it’s a common house type, so it’s going to look familiar to a lot of people just based on their own town, much less countless tv shows. We have a boulevard that runs up the center of my own that has probably two dozen houses with a very similar exterior. It’s a gorgeous place to walk and look at the houses.

Perhaps the house looks familiar to everyone because…wait for it… it looks like so many other houses in Eagle Rock / Pasadena etc etc.

The interior set of “Melissa & Joey” reminds me of the interior set of “My Wife and Kids” but I’m not sure, I didn’t watch it regularly.
So excited about LA magazine and such an adorable picture! The interior reminds me of Growing Pains. The exterior is familiar to all because it’s a Craftsman and they all have a similar look.
